#3: Boardwalk: Showdown in the Sands
June 11, 2000
Interview:
Sierra Johnson comes to the ring alone. She says she helped Adrian Coffey win last week because it was obvious that Ron Hubbard had matched Coffey against the cheater Chopper Taylor to try and teach him some humility. The office doesn't like that Coffey is confident, brash, and quite frankly far ahead of the rest of the class. She helped him get a fair shake last week, that's all. However, she has now signed on as his manager, and as her first managerial act she is out to protest that for the second straight week Coffey has been scheduled to be in the opening bout. After his win last week he should have been moved up the card, so he is not coming out now, he will not come out until at least the second match of the night.
Music plays and Ricky Rodriguez comes to the ring. Ricky is a bit of a diminutive but energetic student making his debut. He makes a short speech about his excitement to be in front of the fans no matter the match placement and how hard he worked, and that its too bad that Coffey is chicken and needs his little dime piece to come out here and do his dirty work. The confrontation between Rodriguez and Johnson is cut short though by the appearance of the veteran referee Dallas Saucier. The ref says that he is ready to start, Rodriguez is ready to start, and the fans are ready to start. So it's now or never. He is going to count to 10 and then ring the bell. If Coffey is not in the ring when the bell sounds than not only will he lose the match but he will be kicked out of the company. With that the count starts, and of course Coffey runs into the ring to beat the count.
Opening Bout
Adrian Coffey 6'0 190 lbs., New York City, NY (student) (/w Sierra Johnson) vs Ricky Rodriguez 5'11 180 lbs., Newark, NJ (student)
Rodriguez catches Coffey entering the ring and gains the immediate advantage. He presses it with his agility and high flying moves. However, when he tries to bounce off the ropes Johnson lowers the top rope sending him to the floor. Coffey nails an impressive tope and then goes back into the ring and distracts Saucier as Johnson lays in some additional kicks. Coffey attacks with a series of elbow drops, knee drops, a flying shouldberblock, and a DDT for a 2 count. He continues to press but can't put his opponent away. He climbs to the top rope but Rodriguez gets his knees up to counter a splash. Rodriguez makes a short comeback but it ends with a rake to the eyes. Johnson jumps on the ring apron to distract the ref and like last week Coffey puts on a pair of brass knuckles and ~waffles~ Rodriguez. He covers him tucking his hand with the knux under his opponent as Saucier gets down to count...but he pulls on Coffey's arm instead to reveal the knux and calls for the bell.
Ricky Roidriguez defeated Adrian Coffey by disqualification for use of a foreign object at 8:49
Post-Match:
Coffey and Johnson are livid but they stop short of physically touching Saucier. The ref has a mic and he says you can fool me once shame on you, that was last week, but you can't fool me twice. He says Chopper Taylor is an honourable wrestler who was here not just to collect a paycheck and to entertain the fans but also to help out the youngsters. Well now, because of that head shot last week with brass knux he is on the shelf with a concussion. He tells Coffey that from now on, before he is allowed to wrestle he is going to get the special pat down treatment looking for foreign objects. It will be conducted by one of the local prison officials and it will be a full cavity search...and it will not be gentle.
While this was happening medics came out to attend to Rodriguez and then help him to the back under his own steam.
Interview:
Bayonet Henderson and Daniel Anderson are interviewed before their match. Henderson is livid about losing a fluke match to Hartman last week and vows his revenge. Likewise Anderson wants to prove himself after losing to El Jardinero last week, but Henderson kind of shrugs that off saying it wasn't an upset that Anderson is still just a green rookie while Jardinero is a wily veteran. Anderson is not impressed.
Bout #2
Bayonet Henderson 6'1 228 lbs. Staten Island, NY (veteran) & Daniel "Iron Fist" Anderson 6'0 200 lbs. Jersey City, NJ (student)
vs
Eric Hartman 6’0” 205 lbs., Atlantic City, NJ (student) & El Jardinero 5’10 171 lbs., Juarez, Mexico (veteran)
The team of Hartman and Jardinero take over the match early and frustrate their opponents with quick tags much to the fans' delight. Anderson is isolated and it takes some double teaming by Henderson to turn the tide. The veteran brawler and technician then goes to work first on Jardinero, and then on Hartman who tags himself in on his partners back. This was a mistake though as the veteran went to work on the youngster before tagging out to Anderson. Iron Fist lived up to his name, after a pair of suplexes he nailed his superman finisher. He went for the cover, but his own partner entered the ring and demanded the tag. He wanted revenge for his loss last week. Anderson at first objected but finally relented and tagged in Henderson. When the vet went to pick up Hartman by the hair he fell victim instead to a roll up. Henderson kicked out at a 2 count but Hartman used the momentum to roll into the corner and tag in Jardinero. The Lucha Libre star nailed a running neck snap, a snap suplex, standing moonsault, and then locked in the STF. Henderson managed to survive for about 30 seconds because he is a tough s.o.b. At one point Anderson made it look like he was going to save his partner but when Hartman wagged his finger at him from across the ring Anderson just waved him off and jumped off the apron. Henderson submitted seconds later.
Eric Hartman & El Jardinero defeated Bayonet Henderson & Daniel Anderson by submission when Jardinero submitted Henderson to the STF at 12:15
Interview:
One of the female students that we haven't seen since the 1st card battle royale Cian Jupiter comes to the ring for an interview. The 20 year old from Nova Scotia Canada shows off her Scottish ancestry with the slightest but still apparent Scottish lilt as well as displaying some tartan. She establishes herself as a future fan favourite by panning to the crowd, but then also talks about her admiration for the Queen of the Boardwalk Angel Hubbard. The fans boo this but she tries to explain to the crowd...but is interrupted by an appearance by Angel Hubbard herself. Jupiter says that Angel was a great help during camp and was so nice to all the girls, including herself. Angel surprisingly thanks Jupiter and gives her a short hug. Angel says she is glad that Jupiter understands that it's a competitive business, that everyone wants to be the best, and that to a certain extent it's just an act...that they are all playing characters. Jupiter refers to Angel as her first mentor and again they hug. Hubbard says it would be her honour to share the ring with Jupiter on her first match tonight and offers her a non-title match. Jupiter is excited and quickly agrees. The fans don't seem to trust Hubbard though.
Bout #3
Shizu Yanai 5’5 120 lbs, Yokohama, Japan (veteran) vs Camila Ortiz 5'6 140 lbs., Philadelphia, PA (student/manager)
Ortiz was not supposed to be wrestling. She had been injured during training camp and since then was gearing up to be a manager, having seen coming out and scouting wrestlers and doing commentary. Before the bout she said on the mic that maybe she was wrong, that after scouting she has determined that even only 50% healthy she is still her own best bet to win the title. Her opponent is the veteran Yanai and perhaps the cream of the crop of female wrestlers here in Boardwalk, even if Hubbard has the title. However, after the bell rang it became apparent that Ortiz had nothing to offer except to run, duck behind the ref, rake the eyes and apply a chokehold. Yanai though fought through it nailing a dragon suplex, a DDT, and looked ready to finish the match when The Girls from the Stoop Kalli Collins & Samantha Mitchell hit the ring.
Shizu Yanai defeated Camila Ortiz by disqualification for outside interference at 5:07
Post-Match: It was an attempted beatdown 2 on 1 but Yanai managed to hold her own, until Ortiz recovered and nailed a low blow. Now it was a 3 on 1 beatdown. Until the ultimate Underdog Emily Adams ran down to the ring to try and make the save. She has some initial success but then falls victim to the 3 on 1 as well. Finally Ortiz just leads the Stoops from the ring leaving Yanai and Adams laid out.
Bout #4
Re-Match
Caleb Nguyen 5'10 190 lbs., Jersey City, NJ (student) & Michael Sully 5'10 185 lbs., Hoboken, NJ (student)
vs
Paul Ledbetter 6'3 245 lbs. Coral Springs, FL (veteran) & Xavier Foster 6'3 240 lbs, Hempstead, NY (student)
Unlike last week Ledbetter and Foster mind the ref's instructions enough to avoid getting disqualified but thats not to say that they didn't double team, choke, punch, and kick their opponents at every turn possible. While Ledbetter openly boot choked Nguyen with Foster goading Sully into distracting the ref, the California duo of O'Sullivan and MacLeod came down to the ring. Unlike last week however they chose not to interfere and just watched. However, it did distract Sully and the ref once again and this allowed the heels to hit a doomsday device to pick up the win.
Paul Ledbetter & Xavier Foster defeated Caleb Nguyen & Michael Sully by pinfall when Foster pinned Nguyen after a doomsday device at 8:58
Post-Match Interview:
Nguyen & Sully are pissed off at O'Sullivan and MacLeod for their distraction. The California duo come to the ring and call the fellow students whiners and complainers. Last week they complained about being helped, this week at not being helped, and they are now 0 and 2. Nguyen and Sully challenge the Californians to a bout next week, but O'Sullivan and MacLeod turn it down saying they already have a match, against Ledbetter and Foster next week. They would rather wrestle against winners, than losers.
Bout #5
Maya Alvarez 5’8 140 lbs., Miami, Florida (student) & Emily Adams 5'8", 140 lbs, Hoboken, NJ (student)
vs
Sophia Torres 5’6 135 lbs. Austin, Texas (student) & Rottweiler Reynolds 5'6", 125 lbs, Philadelphia, PA (student)
Adams coming in to the match already banged up from the earlier beatdown tonight was the story of the match. Torres is more of a sneaky, arrogant heel, while Reynolds surprised even her own partner with a high level of viciousness. That mean streak really seemed to turn Torres on who became the Rottweiler's biggest cheerleader. In the end with Adams down to one good leg, outside the ring, still calling for the hot tag, Alvarez took a look at her partner and decided not to make the tag despite having been isolated for a few minutes. The Rottweiler nailed a belly to back suplex, a running elbow drop to the throat, then a diving double footstomp while Alvarez was holding her throat. Torres tried to call for the tag in but her partner ignored her and made the pin. After the bout Torres tried to celebrate with Reynolds but she seemed more interested in putting on her collar and leash.
Sophia Torres & Rottweiler Reynolds defeated Maya Alvarez & Emily Adams by pinfall when Reynolds pinned Torres after a diving double footstomp at 7:27
Post-Match:
The charismatic, arrogant, Sophia Torres gives a glamorous interview while sitting on the top turnbuckle. She takes complete credit for the victory tonight, but Reynolds doesn't care and just leaves on her own. Torres also makes a plea for fans to join her network over at sixdegrees.com
Bout #6
Non-Title Match
"The Fallen" Angel Hubbard 5’8 140 lbs., Hell’s Kitchen, NY (Student/instructor) vs. Cian Jupiter 5'7", 135 lbs, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia (student)
It started off friendly. In fact it had a bit of an exhibition feel to it as after Hubbard moved out of the way of a flying kneedrop and locked in the figure four she actually voluntarily broke the move and had a short conversation with Jupiter, a teaching moment. However, Jupiter was over matched and Hubbard just kept getting more intense as the match went along. After hitting a fallaway slam she covered for 1, 2, picked up Jupiter, and again talked to her. But this time Jupiter was in no shape to understand the advice. So, Hubbard poured on more punishment, nailed her suspended DDT finisher, covered, 1, 2, she picked up Jupiter again. This time she openly mocked Jupiter, nailed a piledriver, then another suspended DDT. This time she didn't even bother to try a cover, but set up Jupiter for another piledriver. From the back came Shizu Yanai and she went right after Hubbard. The champ decided to live and fight another day.
Angel Hubbard defeated Cian Jupter by disqualification for outside interference at 6:14
interview:
Sheriff Pitney says he is going to call things right down the middle. He doesn't know all of wrestling's rules so he's going to let the wrestlers sort things out themselves. He's just there to make sure things are fair and square.
Main Event
King of the Boardwalk Title Match
Special Guest Referee Sheriff Jay Pitney
The Jersey Devil 5’10, 240 lbs. Parts unknown (veteran) (champion) vs Juni Shiotani 6’0, 232 lbs., Tokyo, Japan (veteran)
Re-match of the Devil's win for the title last week thanks to some distractions during a chaotic lumberjack match. The match is back and forth, inside and outside the ring. The Sheriff allows them to brawl outside the ring, but draws the line at refusing to allow the use of a steel chair. Inside the ring the Devil took over and slowed the match down preying on the inexperience of the Sheriff. He used his wrist tape to choke Juni and used his feet on the middle rope for leverage unseen by Pitney. Juni had been busted open and was beginning to fade. Devil put the challenger in a figure-four but Juni managed to turn it over. The champ made a mistake when he went for a slingshot suplex and Shiotani countered by landing on the apron, hitting a shoulderblock and then a sunset flip for a 2 count. Back on their feet the Devil went for a clothesline but Juni countered with a crucifix for another 2 count. The challenger went for a hurrincanrana but the champ countered with a powerbomb, held on, and delivered two more. He covered but only got a 2 count. He then threw Juni over the top rope, or so he thought. As the champ turned his back to gain his breath, the challenger skinned the cat, and went for a flying bulldog. The champ though was too powerful and countered with snake eyes, and covered, 1, put his feet on the ropes, 2, 3! Tainted victory for the champ.
Jersey Devil defeated Juni Shiotani by pinfall after snakeyes with his feet on the ropes at 12:57
[Jersey Devil retained the King of the Boardwalk]
Post-Match:
Shiotani argued with Sheriff Pitney but there seemed to be a communication problem between them. Pitney's two deputies got in the ring to back up their boss not happy about how aggressive the wrestler was being. Shizu Yanai got in the ring to try and talk Shiotani down (they spoke Japanese to each other) but her English was worse than Juni's. Finally though Pitney managed to get his men to back off and Yanai did the same with Shiotani.
Circuit Notes:
Need to ween off the involvement of Sheriff Pitney and his deputies. That was just an arrangement between Hubbard and his good friend the Sheriff and ties in with the small community feel of Beachwood that he would be allowed to do this for the betterment of the town.
Chopper Taylor's injury was just kayfabe as a way to set up the Adrian Coffey gimmick but also because the veterans are just hired guns and that was the end of Taylor's engagement.
However, last card unfortunately Angel Hubbard, the Queen of the Boardwalk was injured and will be out for the next 3 cards. Yanai was slated for a short run and then back to Japan, but might need to change those plans now.
Some of the angles were suggested by ChatGPT and this was the most useful thing so far that it contributed. Some of the suggestions didn't make sense for the suggested wrestler but were good enough that I just shuffled them to other personnel.
