In Truth; 2013-14 Season Preview
Liberty Television has announced that the drama "In Truth" will return for its second season on September 19th in its Thursday night time slot at 10pm.
The main storylines last season involved the protagonist Irving Dunbar (Michael McGrady) a veteran reporter picking up the sniff of political corruption around congressman Wainright (J.C. MacKenzie) and the death of his intern Raquel McQueen at the hands of his editor Titus. In the second season just as Dunbar loses the trail it picks up again through some illegal union activities which have him hunting down the union bosses, but also finds links again to Wainright and the dirty construction business. His new editor Henry Hartwell (Sandy Helberg) is more amicable then Titus, while his new intern Hobey Portes (Gideon Glick) not as bright as his last one Raquel. His love interest in Raquel's mother Corinna (Kim Delany) and his nemesis in house Francine Kaplan (Caroline Jaden Stussi) also complicate his life.
The show's ratings dipped from a premiere of 1.3 down to the 1.1 and 1.2 range, before bouncing back to the 1.3 range. The season low was in episode 6 on November 8th which garnered a 1.1/3 4.62 rating, while the high was the pilot episode which did a 1.3/4 6.42 rating. One ratings trend was the lowering of the total viewers while the demos stayed the same, showing the departure of many of the older viewers.
The competition in that time slot was Scandal on ABC, Elementary on CBS, and Rock Center, Do No Harm, and Hannibal on NBC. Considering that low level of competition network executives had really hoped for a bigger breakthrough hit then they earned with In Truth. This season the competition remains the same except for Parenthood moving to this time slot to shore it up for NBC. It is possible that in its second season In Truth has that breakthrough but most people asked believe the show will have to pick up its ratings to at least the 1.4 ratings range to stay around for a 3rd season. There have also been multiple reports of a difficult cast mix to handle as well as a writing group who are having trouble maintaining the standard of human intrigue that the network is looking for.
The show has not yet received a full 22 episode order, only the initial 9 episodes.
