Detroit 1-8-7; 2013-14 season preview
Liberty TV has announced that Detroit 1-8-7 will return for its 4th season on Thursday, September 12th 2013, making it one of the network’s earliest premiers. This will be the show’s 3rd season on Liberty, with its first season having been 2010-11 on ABC. Often seen as a “bubble” show by industry insiders and not a shoe-in for renewal, the network has put that to rest by not only putting in a full season’s order but expanding it to a minimum of 24 episodes this season, adding new writers, and a new cast member; Neal McDonough.
Looking back at 2012-13 the show found its groove again with the volatile pairing of enigmatic Det. Fitch (Michael Imperioli) and newcomer fiery Det. Kirchof (Serinda Swan). The show combined its episodic format with a few ongoing storylines that all seemed to crash together at the end of the season. The final episodes saw the murder of former squad member Det. Washington, Fitch’s nervous breakdown, Mahajan coming face to face with the serial killer Kahn, and Kirchof’s past coming to light.
While Liberty TV was happy with the show’s progress and the writing, the fans and critics were both luke warm to the show, with a ratings high on the 18th episode on April 18th of 1.1/3 3.40, up from a season opener of 0.8/2 2.71 on September 20th, and a season low on episode 2 of 0.6/2 2.05. The ratings slowly climbed during the season thanks to the writing, the new show dynamic between Fitch and Kirchof, the emergence of character Mahajan as a star, and the network’s willingness to publically support the show’s chances of continuing. The 22 episode series finished with an average rating of 0.94 in the Thursday 9pm slot.
It’s competition during that slot was Grey’s Anatomy on ABC, Person of Interest on CBS, Beauty and the Beast on CW, Glee on FOX, and The Office and 1600 Penn on NBC. It was a very difficult time slot to compete in but any well written police procedural will find its audience as did Detroit 1-8-7. That loyalty and consistency will be put to the test again this season in the same tough time slot.
This season Grey’s Anatomy returns to ABC, CBS counters with a pair of sit-com’s; Robin Williams new Crazy Ones and the hit show Two and a Half Men, CW has freshman offering Reign, FOX has Glee returning in the Fall; and then Freshman show Rake with Greg Kinnear in mid-season, and NBC has freshman sit-com’s Sean Saves the World, and the Michael J Fox show. The night has become a little less “procedural and criminal in nature” which means Detroit 1-8-7 seems to be in a good spot for continued success.
A new detective is being added to the squad for the upcoming season, Russ Renna (played by Neal McDonough). Renna has recently joined the Detroit Police Department after a long career with the FBI. He has his sights set higher then Detective and has been sent here to get his feet wet and his hands a little dirty. While his instincts and detective work are tremendous his squad mates don’t like his higher ambitions, as well as his unwillingness to get emotionally attached to his work or to take a chance. The newbie will be paired with sophomore detective Kirchof to temporarily replace Fitch who is desk bound after his nervous breakdown last year. Most of the squad though is operating under the assumption that Fitch is burned out and will never return to the field. They also wonder if Renna is after Mason’s job. One of the new storylines this season will be the return of Bobby Fitch (played by Vadim Imperioli, Michael’s real life son) to Detroit to live with his father because the 15 year old is caught in a cycle of violence and bullying. However, his Father’s current condition, his job, and Detroit threaten to make the situation worse. To make matters worse Bobby falls into cahoots with Kirchof’s younger brother Blake who is a drug dealer, causing tension between Fitch and Kirchof. Mahajan becomes a poster boy for the department, a new face in the affirmative action drive, while at the same time coming under fire by his brothers in blue as he begins to date Det. Washington’s widow.
Behind the scenes the show is trumpeting the addition of 3 new writer/producers to the staff, all of which are veterans of the Law & Order series. Richard Sweren and Julie Martin will work as a tandem, while Luke Schelhaas has also been added. Fred Berner has also been added behind the camera as an additional Director, he too is a veteran of the Law & Order procedural. Showrunner-Supervising Producer, Mick Betancourt told the press that these additions were to strengthen the show’s focus in being “ripped from the headlines” but also being realistic. “We did not want to run the risk of running out of new ideas and beginning to create absurd storylines and overblown situations”, said Betancourt on the official media press release.
Episodes already being written for next season include; • A man loses his temper while having a fight with his wife and drives through a restaurant patio killing a child • A pair of brothers are arrested for kidnapping when it is discovered they have kept a girl there as a sexual slave for over a decade; and it brings the detective work of former squad mate Longford into question • The suburb where Captain Mason lives has to contact the squad when there own police staff refuse to arrest 4 suspects in a rape because they are prized members of the high school football team • Two men and one woman are shot in separate incidents within a couple hours in the same neighborhood and police are left with no witnesses, no suspects, and no patience
Jason Richman remains as the Creator, Executive Producer, and a writer for the show, with Betancourt acting as showrunner, and David Zabel remains as an executive producer, and writer/producer and also in charge of overseeing the writing staff. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman continue to assist Betancourt and Zabel as EP’s, while Kevin Hooks, Dean White, and Jeff Nachmanoff return as directors in addition to the newcomer Fred Berner. Phononzell Williams and Nikki Toscano return as writer/producers, in a stable that also now includes Zabel, Schelhaas, and the team of Sweren/Martin. Doing the simple math that’s 5 writers/teams sharing the 24 episode order, or around 5 episodes each, a very manageable number.

Liberty Television has announced that Detroit 1-8-7 will return for its 6th season starting September 24th. This will be the show's 5th season on Liberty (the first being on ABC) with original creator and executive producer Jason Richman still at the helm. The show has once again defied the numbers and been given a full season order from Liberty. It remains an ABC studios show along with Remainder Men and Mandeville Television.
The consistency behind the cameras though is offset by the changes in front of the cameras. Once again the cast has been shaken up with Natalie Martinez (Ariana Sanchez) being taken off and a trio of newcomers added (David Hewlett as Ian MacGray), (Alexandra Castillo as Maria Santiago), and (Sofia Milos as Francesa Dellacruz). Ian MacGray starts as Mahajan's new partner replacing Sanchez; a bit quirky having grown up in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in Canada, extremely bright but lacking well rounded people skills. Alexandra Castillo joins the team as in house IT desk help, and the ever popular Sofia Milos onboards as Francesca Dellacruz, deputy chief of police and a political juggernaut.
After the explosive conclusion of last season, this season will being back to the roots of the show with gritty realistic stories. While some will still feature that "ripped from the headlines" approach, others will follow two common themes; drugs and domestic violence. The show will focus more on the mental and psychological effect the job has on the detectives this year rather then the physical effects. However, a longer more intense story arc is being prepared for the second half of the season that will heavily involve Milos' (Dellacruz) desire for power.
To make room for the new cast some recurring faces including former squad leader Maureen Mason (played by Aisha Hinds), retired detective Jesse Longford (played by James McDaniel), and Bobby Fitch (played by Vadim Imperioli) the son of Detective Louis Fitch are not scheduled to make appearances this season.
Detroit 1-8-7 remains in the Thursday 9:00pm timeslot where it will face competition from CBS' Thursday Night Football behemoth (sitcoms Mom and Angel from Hell take over in the new year), popular ABC offering Scandal, CW's The Originals, FOX's Sleepy Hollow, and NBC's The Blacklist. Ratings expectations for the show remain fairly low counting on keeping its current audience with about a 1.2 share, hopefully raising a bit after Football is finished.

Detroit 1-8-7; 2016-17 Season Preview
The longest running procedural in network history, Detroit 1-8-7, returns for a 7th year this fall amidst rumors that it will be the last, or at least the last for showrunner Jason Richman and lead actor Michael Imperioli. The show returns to its Thursday night at 9pm/8cst slot but is the last holdover on the night. It's lead-in will be a pair of new sit-coms "The Greater Good" and "Real Genius", and will be followed by the veteran Michael Connelly/Harry Bosch cop show "Hollywood RHD".
In front of the camera Neal McDonough as Russ Renna is gone (left for "Rollin" on Liberty), as is behind the camera Nikki Toscano as Writer/PROD (left for "24: Legacy" on Fox). With Louis Fitch (Michael Imperioli) promoted, his spot is being filled in the squad by intimidating Davian Coates (Omar J Dorsey). Competition will be stiff with ABC's new show "Notorious" (than "Scandal"), CBS' Thursday Night Football (than "Mom"/"Life in Pieces"), CW's Supernatural, FOX' new show "Pitch" (than "Bones"), and NBC's "Chicago Med" (than Thursday Night Football). However, with the presence of football and new shows, the network feels a procedural will be better situated to pick up casual viewers in this slot than would a serial.
This season features Louis Fitch being promoted to Lieutenant and taking over running the squad from Renna, even though his appointment is on an interim basis. However, the squad is still reeling from the Byrd assassination and MacGray wrestles with the truth of what he saw (Bobby Fitch was the shooter). A new detective is brought in to replace Fitch, and its the very intimidating Davian Coates (Omar J Dorsey) who apparently was a friend of Det. Washington's and still bears a grudge towards the squad. Dellacruz continues her search for power, and with Renna out of the way, she hopes in vain to have a better relationship with Fitch. New commander Fitch faces an immediate crisis of ethics when some recovered diamonds may be kept "off books" to allow the squad to get better equipment; and a political crisis when the deputy mayor is gunned down and the squad doesn't know if it was just circumstances or a political target.

Detroit 1-8-7 Episode guide season 7
7.01 - "Endless Summer" (Sep 22/2016) 1.2/4 4.41 It's been 3 months since Louis Fitch took over the squad as interim commander and the crew heads off to the local pub to celebrate the end of summer, and to share remembrances of the crazy, hot summer. Kirchof and MacGray recount the stabbing case where a bird swooped down and took off with the murder weapon. Mahajan recounts the first case he caught with his new partner Coates where a family was brutally murdered and with the step-father missing the state wide manhunt that ensued. The squad whispers about the bad attitude of Coates and how they just found out last week that he was a friend of deceased Detective Washington; and still holds a grudge against the squad, blaming them for Washington's death, making him anything but friendly. The squad grills Fitch about his relationship with Dellacruz who they refer to as Cougar-Shark Cruz. MacGray has flashbacks to the Byrd assassination and to the knowledge that it was Bobby Fitch who pulled the trigger; and how the secret has strained his relationship with Commander Fitch.
7.02 - "Diamonds/Hugo & Dave" (Sep 29/2016) 1.1/4 4.12
After making a bunch of noise about funding cuts from the bankrupt City of Detroit and the lack of updated life saving equipment such as vests, Fitch and Dellacruz concoct a plan to make some diamonds disappear after a bust that were not inventoried correctly. Fitch is able to use his New York contacts to fence the diamonds and then the money is donated to the city and specified how it is to be used; the squad gets their vests is one of the items. Immediately it becomes apparent that Dellacruz now expects Fitch to tow the party line; something he did not bargain for. After taking down a pair of bank robbers, when the squad tries to flip one against another, they find a complication; before their criminal partnership the two men had married each other so that they could invoke spousal privilege if ever caught. MacGray goes to see a police psychiatrist about his dilemma.
7.03 - "Last Day/He's Not Heavy" (Oct 6/2016) 1.1/4 4.25 Mahajan and Coates investigate when two youth workers (who are themselves young) are murdered at a half-way house in its closing days; a case that ends up putting the two further at odds. Kirchof and MacGray investigate a missing person when the man's brother insists that he was killed by a biker gang after a drug deal went bad; and that his brother put himself in the line of fire to save him. When briefing Fitch on the case MacGray has an outburst against Fitch's suggestions.
7.04 - "Serpent/Conflict Resolution" (Oct 13/2016) 1.0/4 3.88 Kirchof and MacGray are called to the site when an exotic snake escapes from a man's room and kills his niece who was spending the night on the couch. Mahajan and Coates are sent for conflict resolution; but its a meeting for coffee with Washington's widow that sets them straight. Dellacruz calls in yet another favor from Fitch.
7.05 - "Political Intrigue (1)" (Oct 20/2016) 0.9/3 3.63
Following a fundraiser being attended by both Dellacruz and Fitch, the city's deputy mayor is shot to death following a dispute outside the hall. Witnesses report the deputy mayor stepping in to break up a fight between a man and a woman, and then the man shot the deputy mayor. As the entire squad works the investigation it starts to look like the fight was a set-up and that the murder may have been premeditated. 7.06 - "Political Intrigue (2)"
The squad is forced to work with Homeland Security when the deputy mayor's killing looks like it may have been done by a Muslim. Dellacruz exhibits signs of PTSD. MacGray has to return home to bury his Father, and runs afoul with airport security.
7.07 - "Bad Advice/Road Rage" Mahajan and Coates investigate when an advice columnist is murdered while walking his dog, only days after retiring and being "outed" in the newspaper; which means while his wife is the number one suspect the detectives also have to investigate past recipients of the public advice. Meanwhile, Kirchof and MacGray investigate a beating death during a road rage case where there were many eye witnesses; but their stories of what happened vary widely due to racial prejudice and driving habits. Dellacruz and Fitch are left scrambling when Homeland Security comes across possible evidence in regards to the missing diamonds.
7.08 - "Job Application/Motown" On Black Friday both Kirchof and Fitch come into work with bad colds because they don't want to be branded as calling in sick to shop for deals. Kirchof and MacGray investigate when a man is murdered by a an applicant during a job interview; and the man claims self-defense against rape, but the detectives try to make a premeditated link between the two men. Ten years after losing his lawsuit for plagiarism, an unknown poet is thought to have murdered the elderly singer who he claims stole his song; Mahajan and Coates investigate.
