River City Wrestling #600
March 16, 1996
Winnipeg, Manitoba
The return of RCW to Television with a brand new 2 hour slot on Global Television, with originating station CKND in Winnipeg. We are one month ahead of schedule from the original announcement last December.
This card also marks out annual St. Patrick's Week Shenanigans.
Hour #1
Opening segment;
Commissioner Jim Brunzell is on hand to welcome everyone to the new show. Brunzell brings out the competitors for the first match Lewis O'Day and Keywon Grant. Brunzell tries to swerve the crowd and O'Day by saying this match was originally scheduled as a rematch for the RCW Heritage title. But that title is being taken away from O'Day. Instead, the new title will be a return to the Television title, since we are returning to the air waves. It should also be noted that O'Day came out in his very Irish outfit to help celebrate St. Paddy's day.
Opening Bout
RCW Television Title Match
Keywon Grant defeated Lewis O'Day by disqualification for using a foreign object at 8:35
[Lewis O'Day retained the RCW Television Title]
**O'Day used all the pre-match distraction to get in a sneak attack before the opening bell. That set the tone for the bout, but Grant made a spirited comeback. It looked like Grant might be taking his title belt but while he was setting up the champ for a suplex the champ was getting a pair of brass knux ready which he used to ~waffle~ the former champ and get himself DQ'd. A post match beat down was then applied.
Bout #2
David Jericho defeated Jesse Hennig by pinfall after an inside cradle at 5:20
**upset win for Jericho's first solo match in RCW. Hennig was going strong but he went for the jumping neck snap but Jericho must have heard him coming and moved out of the way. Hennig crashed, Jericho hit him with a savate kick and then an inside cradle for a quick win.
Bout #3
Repo Man defeated Tom Zenk by submission to the crowbar at 4:37
**simply put Repo Man was a pest, and got under the skin of Zenk who then made a couple mistakes, had the referee step between them, Repo Man snuck in a punch to the head, nailed a bulldog, and then his finisher. Impressive outing.
Bout #4
Wahoo McDaniel and Manny Silva battled to a double countout at 9:51
**well these two men are cut from the same cloth, give no quarter, ask no quarter. The only difference is that McDaniel has a conscience, but even he seemed to put that aside when dealing with Silva. Nothing was settled in this one.
Hour #2
Bout #5
North American Women's Title
Emma Bezzlerr defeated Madusa Micelli by pinfall after a powerbomb (with her feet on the ropes) at 6:15
[Emma Bezzlerr Won the North American Women's Title]
**Micelli has been a busy lady in the wrestling world but made a brief stop back in RCW and dropped her title in a controversial manner to Bezzlerr.
Bout #6
RCW Tag Team Title Match
Man Mountain Rock & Hakushi defeated AC Crual & The Actuary (/w Emma Bezzlerr) by pinfall when Hakushi pinned AC Crual after a handspring moonsault at 10:09
[Man Mountain Rock & Hakushi retained the RCW Tag Team Titles]
**despite the result it was a pretty good outing for the Germans. They looked good and controlled large segments of the bout. In the end though the champs just continue to have a strange natural chemistry that carries them through.
Hall of Fame Announcement
Matt Brock, Jack McAdam, Stan Mullen, and Mike Valiant are present for the announcement. Committee members The Destroyer, and Chris Lyon were not able to make it tonight. They announce that the biggest issue this year was there were two very strong candidates to choose from. In fact the committee seriously considered inducting two new members this year. However in the end they decided to stay with tradition and elect one new entrant. So on April 6th the Hall of Fame will add it's nine member (joining The Destroyer, Marty Goldstein, Chris Lyon, Tawney England, Mike Valiant, Corrie England, Larry Cameron, and David Schultz). That ninth member will be none other then recently retired Ben Bassarab.
This was a very popular choice with the fans of course who gave the committee a standing ovation.
Main Event
RCW Heavyweight Title Match
Stan Lane (/w Nick Bockwinkel) defeated Greg Valentine by countout at 13:33
[Greg Valentine retained the RCW Heavyweight Title]
**strange for Valentine to actually be cheered in Winnipeg but that was the case tonight as he faced a double whammy of the traitor Stan Lane and the arrogant Nick Bockwinkel. Fortunately for the fans the champ didn't fight like a good guy and this was a pier 6 brawl. Lane tried to put away the champ with a superkick but connected with the shoulder instead of the chin so Valentine was able to kick out. However this allowed Lane to work over the shoulder and try and get a submission. Lane also distracted the ref while Bock leaned in and smashed away at the shoulder. Valentine made a great comeback and dropped Lane with his big elbow from the second buckle. As Lane lay on the mat flat out Valentine left the ring and chased Bock around. He finally caught him, nailed him with a forearm uppercut, then a punch, and a scoop slam. Valentine was going to do more damage but he realized he was being counted out and tried in vain to get back into the ring in time. While Valentine argued his countout with the ref, Bockwinkel reached into the ring, grabbed Lane by the shoulders and hauled him out of the ring to safety.
That's it for RCW's return to television. We'll see you next week!
