River City Wrestling #561 January 21, 1995 Winnipeg, Manitoba 15th Annual Award Show
Opening Bout Caveman Broda (5'7" 199 lbs. Winnipeg, MB) ("I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" ZZ Top) vs Atomic Punk (6'1" 251 lbs., Orange County, CA) ("Cowgirl" Underworld) **Punk had very little difficulty with Broda so spent a lot of time jawing with the fans [Atomic Punk defeated Caveman Broda by pinfall after a split legged moonsault at 6:07] 1994: Match of the Year: April 23: RCW # 543: Best 2 out of 3 Falls Midnight Express: Stan Lane & Dennis Condrey defeated Killer Bees: Jim Brunzell & Brian Blair 2 falls to 1 Jim Brunzell came out to accept an award on behalf of himself, Brian Blair, Dennis Condrey, and Stan Lane. None of the others could be on hand tonight.
1994: Feud of the Year: Jim Brunzell vs Greg Valentine Jim Brunzell and Greg Valentine came to the ring to accept individual plaques to honour them as the "1994 RCW Feud of the Year". To top it off they will hook up again one more time tonight in a #1 contenders match for the heavyweight title. Of course it didn't end well with Valentine complaining that the plaques listed it as "Jim Brunzell vs. Greg Valentine" when his name should be first. One thing led to another and of course Valentine smacked Brunzell in the head with his plaque and stomped away at him.
Bout #2 Pamela Principal (5'6" 135 lbs., Santa Monica, CA) ("She Rides Like a Hurricane" Heydey) vs Dawn Whitham (5'5" 175 lbs., Newark, NJ) ("Seasons in the Abyss" Slayer) **originally it was advertised as North American Women's champion Sherri Martel to defend against Principal. However a few days before the event it was switched to Whitham as Martel could not make it. Whitham is a powerful force, a legit bodybuilder, weightlifter who has a nasty side. She pummeled the popular Principal, and decided after the bout to spank her over her knee as well. [Dawn Whitham defeated Pamela Principal by submission to the full nelson at 7:11] 1994: Manager/Valet of the Year: Jon Paul Demans The unpopular announcement was made by Commissioner Baron von Raschke. Demans could not be on hand tonight. It snaps a four year winning streak for Nick Bockwinkel (this the fans cheered).
Bout #3 Nick Mercury (6'2 233 lbs. San Diego, CA) ("Man in Motion" John Parr) vs Johnny Aztec (5'10" 210 lbs., Texcoco, Mexico) ("Indian Outlaw" Tim McGraw) **Mercury is totally stuck in the 80's dude, but was the better of these wrestlers. He wore down Aztec but when the young Mexican got into trouble he used an undetected brass knuckles shot to pick up a tainted win. [Johnny Aztec defeated Nick Mercury by pinfall after hitting him with brass knuckles at 5:53]
Bout #4 Chi Chi Cruz (6'1" 235 lbs. Winnipeg, MB) ("Get The Funk Out" Extreme) vs Grave Digger (6'5" 350 lbs., parts unknown) (Overture from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera) **Grave Digger had very little problem with Cruz. He is basically an Undertaker rip-off created by Mid-South wrestling. [Grave Digger defeated Chi Chi Cruz by pinfall after a powerbomb at 5:06] Bout #5 Chris Benoit (5'11" 220 lbs., Edmonton, AB) ("Push" Moist) vs Peter Strongbow (6'0" 225 lbs., Broken Arrow, OK) ("Indian Outlaw" Tim McGraw) **Benoit makes his return to RCW and is his usual impressive self, reminding everyone of a young Ben Bassarab. He dominated most of this bout except when Strongbow resorted to cheating. In the end after a pair of snap suplexes, and Benoit climbing to the top rope, Johnny Aztec came in and knocked Benoit to the mat. It was a 2 on 1 attack for the Indian Outlaws. [Chris Benoit defeated Peter Strongbow by disqualification for outside interference at 7:54]
Bout #6 The Derelict (6'2" 255 lbs. Skid Row, USA) ("Dirty Deeds" AC/DC) vs Sean Cassidy (5'11" 220 lbs., Los Angeles, CA) ("Talk Dirty to Me" Poison) **No good reason for these two to lock up again, other then for the Derelict to put his stamp on the final results of the feud. [The Derelict defeated Sean Cassidy by pinfall after a Tornado punch at 8:12]
1994 Tag Team of the Year: Robbie Royce & Dan Kroffat The tag team champions Robbie Royce & Dan Kroffat were on hand to accept their awards as the participants for the next match, the #1 contenders bout circled the ring like sharks. No altercation came about. This award could have gone any of four ways, as there were 4 teams who all held the belt for a few months each in 1994. However, the current champs ended with the belts which probably weighted it in their favour.
Bout #7 #1 Contenders Match Stan Baker & Jesse Hennig (combined wt. 490 lbs.) ("Rest in Peace" Extreme) vs Makhan Singh & Iron Mike Sharpe (combined wt. 683 lbs.) ("Miami Vice Theme" Jan Hammer) **Hennig is the only one of these four who could wrestle their way out of a paper bag. So it was up to him to carry the match and he did much of it by playing Ricky Morton. The other 3 men contributed a lot of "psychology" as well as kicks and punches to the match. In the end the complimentary nature of Baker & Hennig's skill sets allowed them to neutralize Singh by knocking him off the ring apron (like a turtle trying to right himself up), and then they double teamed Sharpe to get the win. Interestingly this was a bout between two rulebreaker teams. [Stan Baker & Jesse Hennig defeated Makhan Singh & Iron Mike Sharpe by pinfall when Baker pinned Sharpe after a heart punch at 11:03]
Bout #8 #1 Contenders Match Jim Brunzell (5'10" 235 lbs. White Bear Lake, MN) ("Born to Run" Bruce Springsteen") vs Greg Valentine (6'0" 243 lbs. Seattle, WA) (I'm Broken" Pantera) **For two such bitter rivals, and considering what occured earlier in the night this match started off surprisingly calm and careful. Too careful for the fans liking who grew restless with the pace. It showed that both men are consummate professionals who wanted the win, and the title shot at Stan Lane. Lots of rest holds, breaks, etc, and before you know it we were 10 minutes into the bout. Valentine then took over working over the legs of Brunzell, but unable to get him locked into a figure-four. Then surprisingly the Hammer changed tactics with a burst of a German suplex, a spinebuster slam, and then a piledriver...but only got a 2 count as Brunzell managed to get a foot over the ropes. The match then spilled outside the ring where we finally saw some serious heat. Brunzell's head had been opened up earlier tonight from the plaque shot, and now it was bleeding through the bandages. In fact Valentine ripped the bandage off the head of Brunzell and then peppered him with punches. Back inside though the scent and taste of blood got Brunzell rallying. Forearms, a really high sunset flip, monkey flip out of the corner, a slingshot suplex, but Valentine managed to duck away from a dropkick attempt. The match spilled outside again where Valentine took control. Back inside he went after the legs again but when he tried to put on the figure-four Brunzell countered with a legwhip then put Valentine in the Indian death lock causing him to tap out. Great match. [Jim Brunzell defeated Greg Valentine by submission to the Indian death lock at 21:02]
Bout #9 RCW Tag Team Title Match (champions) Robbie Royce & Dan Kroffat (combined wt. 451 lbs.) ("The Final Countdown" Europe) vs Derrick Dukes & Mike Lozansky (combined wt. 436 lbs.) ("Danger Zone" Kenny Loggins) **First time Dukes and Lozansky teamed, so not sure why they got a title shot, although it was necessary to beat the 30 day defence requirement. It also marks Lozansky's return to the ring after nearly a month on the injury list. The rust showed and Lozansky didn't look like his old high flying self. There was also limited chemistry between Dukes and Lozansky. However, overall there was good sportsmanship, but also good competition, and lots of action for the fans to enjoy. In the end the champs though just proved too much for the challengers. [Robbie Royce & Dan Kroffat defeated Derrick Dukes & Mike Lozansky by pinfall when Kroffat pinned Lozansky after a superkick at 12:10] [Robbie Royce & Dan Kroffat retained the RCW Tag Team Titles]
1994: Wrestler of the Year: Ben Bassarab When Commissioner Baron von Raschke came out to award the wrestler of the year it took many by surprise that it was won by Ben Bassarab; although the decision seemed to delight the crowd. Bassarab is one of the all time greats in RCW, having held the TV/Heritage title a record 5 times and the tag titles 4 times. This year there were 4 different men who held the Heavyweight title, Stan Lane, Jim Brunzell, Greg Valentine, and Harley Tragger. While Lane was a strong candidate since he started the year as champ and then ended the year as champ, he also spent the majority of the year outside of RCW. Jim Brunzell was the obvious choice having held the belt as well as having been a top competitor throughout the year. However, Ben Bassarab held the Heritage title for the first 6 months, had a fantastic feud with Vampiro, and the event that probably put him over to win this award, one the first ever "Night of the Ironmen" tournament. Bassarab was very grateful and gracious when accepting the award. He also said he hopes to win his 6th Heritage title tonight.
Main Event RCW Heritage Title Match (champion) Jack O'Jugular (6'3" 240 lbs., Tarrytown, NY) ("Godzilla" Blue Oyster Cult) vs Ben Bassarab (5'10" 215 lbs. Calgary, AB) ("You've Got Another Thing Comin'" Judas Priest) **O'Jugular attacked Bassarab before the opening bell, knocked him down in the corner, laid in the boots, boot choked him, then left the ring and slammed his head into the ringpost. This drew the ire of the referee Buddy Lane who delayed the match as much as he could but did not disqualify O'Jugular as that would leave him with the title. It was an uphill battle after that for Bassarab as he seemed groggy and just tried to survive the onslaught of the champ. He made a couple short comebacks but for the most part looked like he was punch drunk. Finally after a ref bump O'Jugular went and got a chair to bring to the ring. From the back came Nick Mercury who wrestled the chair away from the champ. The match resumed and Lane woke up, and Jugular was still in charge. However, it seemed like the champ may have wore himself down as he slowed down the pace. This allowed Bassarab to make a comeback. The turning point came when the champ went for a running boot and the challenger sidestepped him, and then took him down with a spinebuster slam. On top Bassrab peppered the champ with punches. He then picked him up and went to work with a pair of snap suplexes, a front layout slam, and a powerbomb to get a 2 count. He then nailed a pair of dropkicks and then a running powerslam to get another 2 count. The challenger had the fans on their feet as he climbed to the top rope and came off with a flying crossbody block, but the champ hit the mat rolled through, got 1, 2, a handful of tights, 3. Tainted victory for the champ. [Jack O'Jugular defeated Ben Bassarab by pinfall after rolling through a diving crossbody block with a handful of tights at 14:28] [Jack O'Jugular retained the RCW Heritage Title]
