River City Wrestling #499
July 4, 1992
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Opening Bout:
Stan Saxon defeated Randy Mullett by pinfall following a sidewalk slam at 5:20
-Saxon's first victory in RCW
Bout #2
Archangel defeated Donny Brook by submission to the full nelson at 4:23
-Archangel's premiere. Well built, muscular, 5'11 245 lbs., not a terrible worker but wouldn't be confused with Lou Thesz either. Came out as a heel.
Bout #3
Brett Como defeated Sandy Beach after a top rope splash at 6:56
-decent showing for Beach who is trying to elevate himself from curtain jerker, but it looks like Como might be ditching the tag team scene and started his new direction with a solid win.
Bout #4
Jerry Lynn defeated Sebastien Rikard by pinfall after a diving crossbody at 9:31
-another solid match between two guys both just looking to get to the pay window and start climbing that ladder. Following the loss Rikard was visibly upset and kicked away at the bottom rope and turnbuckle, argued with the ref and then the crowd. Finally security managed to convince him to head to the showers without incident.
Bout #5
J.W. Storm defeated Kid Gallahad by pinfall after a neckbreaker drop at 11:01
-pretty good match, a rematch from last card when Gallahad got DQ'd for choking out Storm. Gallahad tried to jump Storm before the bell but the big man threw him into the corner and pounded the Scottish punk. Storm beat Gallahad from pillar to post for 4 minutes but was unable to get the pin. Gallahad finally made a comeback thanks to a rake of the eyes and a thumb to the throat. Gallahad controlled the match but unable to get the win himself he went higher risk as the match progressed. Finally he tried for a crossbody from the top buckle onto Storm outside the ring, but Storm moved out of the way. Storm could have got a countout win but broke the count getting back into the ring, then rolled back outside to retrieve his opponent. Back inside Storm whipped Gallahad to the buckle then took him over with a powerslam...got a 2 count...hit the neckbreaker drop and got the win.
Bout #6
#1 contenders match
Dirty White Boy defeated Soultaker (/w Nick Bockwinkel) by pinfall after a hotshot at 8:20
-Commissioner Jim Brunzell set this match up himself. On the surface it was a #1 contenders match for the Heavyweight title, but underneath that there was a measure of revenge for what DWB did to Sandy Beach last card. However, things did not exactly go as planned. DWB had his moments but when he went for his finisher chokeslam it was blocked by the bigger Soultaker. The big man controlled most of the rest of the match but DWB made a big impression when reeling and staggering he managed to grab on to Soultaker and take him backward, bouncing his throat off the top rope, then rolled him up for a pin, getting the 1, put his feet over the middle strand for leverage, 2, 3.
Bout #7
North American Women's Title Match
"Submission Match"
Beverlee Hills defeated Cynthia Rothrock by submission to the Smother at 7:50
[Beverlee Hills Won the North American Women's Title]
-strange match. Jim Brunzell came out prior to the match and announced that unfortunately he had been over ruled by the board of directors and that Hills' smothering move was deemed to be legal, as long as it wasn't a "choke hold". So for this match the smother would be legal. Hills got on the mic and goaded Rothrock into making this a submission only match, no pinfalls allowed, looking to neutralize her deadly spinning heel kick. As could be predicted at one point the champ nailed the finisher, forgot and went for the pin. Rothrock managed to try to get a submission with an armbar, a leglock, and a sleeperhold but could not seal the deal. Hills though had more luck with her smothering move.
Bout #8
Nick Bockwinkel & Ben Bassarab defeated Baron von Raschke & The Natural by pinfall when Bockwinkel pinned Natural after a piledriver at 12:17
-as might be expected the two young guys Bassarab and Natural worked most of the match, and Bassarab was far superior to Natural. So despite a late rally by the Baron, the end came when Bassarab had softened up Natural and Bockwinkel finished him off.
Main Event
RCW Tag Team Title Match
Bob Orton Jr. & Mike Lozansky and Harley Tragger & Troy Galveston battled to a double countout at 10:47
[Orton & Lozansky retained the RCW Tag Team Titles]
-A little surprising when this match between two fan favorite teams degenerated into one of the biggest brawls this year. Orton and Galveston really went at it, like two cowboys at last call. Referee Buddy Lane tried to restore order but to no avail. Then just after it was thrown out and all 4 men were still outside the ring brawling, the Nick Bockwinkel Talent Agency (Nick Bockwinkel, Soultaker, Ben Bassarab) also came out to join the fray. The brawl lasted another 5 minutes with Jim Brunzell & Baron von Raschke also coming out to try and break it up and ending up being dragged into the fisticuffs.
River City Wrestling #500
July 18, 1992
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Opening Bout
Archangel defeated Sandy Beach by pinfall after a full nelson slam at 4:28
-second straight victory for the newcomer Archangel, and in easy and impressive style against a guy Beach who had been building some momentum. As an aside, Sebastien Rikard came out to scout and watch this match from the announce table, but was unwilling to actually engage in conversation with the announce team.
Bout #2
Brett Como & Sebastien Rikard defeated Donny Brook & Randy Mullett by pinfall when Rikard pinned Mullett after a swinging neckbreaker at 6:31
-just a filler match with two throw together teams.
Bout #3
Ben Bassarab (/w Nick Bockwinkel) defeated The Natural by pinfall after a diving crossbody at 4:56
-quick match for Bassarab, and maybe the end of the line for the Natural.
Bout #4
Dirty White Boy defeated Jerry Lynn by pinfall after a chokeslam at 11:27
-DWB wins this battle of two guys both just outside the championship scene. DWB is the #1 contender and awaits the winner of the Vendetta - Rogue battle.
Bout #5
Soultaker (/w Nick Bockwinkel) and J.W. Storm battled to a double countout at 4:30
-Two big men, the match got nasty fast, and will carry forward unsettled business to next card.
Bout #6
North American Women's Title Match
Cynthia Rothrock defeated Beverlee Hills by disqualification for a chokehold at 8:02
[Beverlee Hills retained the North American Women's Title]
-The champ used her forearm to choke out the challenger, trying to disguise it with her ample bosom, but that didn't fool referee Jurgen Hermann who was keeping a close eye on the Hills.
Bout #7
RCW Tag Team Title Match
Bob Orton Jr & Mike Lozansky defeated Harley Tragger & Troy Galveston by pinfall when Orton pinned Galveston after a running bulldog at 10:21
[Orton & Lozansky retained the RCW Tag Team Titles]
-Soultaker and Ben Bassarab came down at one point to scout the match much to the annoyance of both teams. Other than that however there were no other shenanigans, and the match was fought hard but fair. In the end though Orton managed to take out the much younger Galveston.
Bout #8
RCW Heritage Title Match
Baron von Raschke defeated Nick Bockwinkel by disqualification for use of a foreign object at 11:38
[Baron von Raschke retained the RCW Heritage Title]
-Lots of old school, delays and attempts by Bock to frustrate Raschke, rest holds, trunk pulls, etc. Bockwinkel controlled most of the match and it looked like the title might change hands. However, Raschke made a spirited comeback only to have Bock reverse a whip attempt and send the champ colliding with referee Jurgen Hermann. Bockwinkel retrieved a steel chair and ~waffled~Raschke, covered, no ref, Hermann slowly recovered...and threw the match out, apparently having seen the chair shot. In for a penny, in for a pound, Bockwinkel decided to nail Raschke a second time with the chair, then a third....the champ was busted wide open. Commissioner Jumpin' Jimmy Brunzell hit the ring and dropkicked Bockwinkel from behind sending him head first into the buckle, the former AWA champ's head smashing into the chair and he came up from the mat wearing the crimson mask as well. Brunzell was fired up!!
Main Event
RCW Heavyweight Title Match
Vendetta defeated Rogue by countout at 10:09
[Vendetta retained the RCW Heavyweight Title]
-another chapter in this feud, this time seeing Rogue getting his rematch after dropping the belt to Vendetta in June. Nothing new here between these two, just lots of hatred, match going in and out of the ring. Finally Vendetta began to really wear down Rogue. The challenger managed to escape a DDT finisher attempt, slid out of the ring, and walked away!!
