The Greater Good; 2016-17 Season Preview

Liberty television conspires to bring you the new workplace comedy with a twist; starting this fall on Thursday's at 8pm/7cst.

The Greater Good is a workplace comedy set in the world of conspiracy theories. A disgraced former CIA agent begins his own online tabloid trying to reveal the same truths that got him kicked out of the agency. The majority of his staff are part time "believers" who flood the office late at night to discover and write up stories. Unknown to him most of his co-workers are also now CIA plants, except for a young intern that shows the most promise.

Greater Good will act as a lead-in for another new Liberty comedy, "Real Genius". The competition is incredibly stiff with Grey's Anatomy on ABC, The Big Bang Theory on CBS, Legends of Tomorrow on CW, Superstore on NBC. Big Bang on CBS and Superstore on NBC split the year with NFL Football, although Greater Good only faces the pre-game shows not the actual games. An opportunity exists early on then with Greater Good facing only sit-com competition from modestly rated Superstore.

The show should also gain attention from its show of diversity with lead Allan Carlsson (Simon Templeman) being married to another man Phillip Workman (J.C. MacKenzie) which will play front and center starting with the second episode. Additionally it reaches out to fans of actual conspiracies with many "digs" or inside jokes. Richard Belzer has been added to the writing staff to provide that perspective, in addition to voicing the role of "The Narrator" of the show.

1.01 - "Pilot" (Sep 22/2016) 0.6/2 2.86
A chance meeting at The Daily Grind coffee shop has Allan Carlsson the director of "The Greater Good" hire young Dexter Lehrner as an unpaid intern. When the rest of the crew Gabriella, Bruce, and Wine show up to work that night they find a potential story of a young man who may have been returned after an alien abduction. Allan, Bruce and Dexter ride over to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to investigate while Gabriella and Wine remain at the offices (because they have paying day jobs). Gabriella and Wine are actually plants for the CIA and report on Allan's movements to the Deputy Director; yet an oblivious Allan begins to believe that Dexter may actually be a CIA plant but on Bruce's advice decides to play it cool and keep an eye on him. The Deputy Director is more than happy to have The Greater Good break the story of the possible alien abduction to cover up their real role in the story.

1.02 - "Cocktails" (Sep 29/2016) 0.5/2 2.50
Allan hosts his annual staff cocktail party at his condo which he shares with his husband Phillip Workman; who likes to make a fuss. Gabriella and Wine spend most of the party trying to find excuses which will lead them to their annual replacement of the CIA listening and video devices in the home; their plans go astray when the last device can not be accessed because it is in a popcorn maker that Bruce spends the entire party trying to fix. Dexter spends most of the party trying to keep his distance from Phillip who he believes is hitting on him. Allan has a panic attack after one of the bugs malfunctions and actually broadcasts part of a phone conversation being had by the Deputy Director.

1.03 - "Keep Your Distance, Freak" (Oct 6/2016) 0.6/2 2.89
When Dexter's girlfriend insists on being introduced to his new co-workers he brings her into work; which has such a profound impact on her that she breaks up with Dexter. Wine and Dexter go for drinks and commiserate over women problems and the effect of this hobby on their love life. After Bruce has a friend sweep Allan's apartments for bugs (and finds some but not all of the devices), he and Bruce discuss their respective fallouts from the CIA in flashbacks. The narrator suffers from a bad head cold.

1.04 - "The Ghosts Run Hot and Cold" (Oct 13/2016)  0.6/2 2.60
After Bruce confides to Dexter that Allan thinks he may be a CIA plant, Dexter makes up a ghost story in his past to try and give Allan a reasonable explanation as to his interest in the field. An excited Allan takes a road trip with Dexter to his Virginia home where his parents still live. Neither of his parents will tell anything to Allan about any ghost, and Dexter's father strongly disapproves of Allan and holds the whole business in disdain, while Dexter's Mom has the hots for Allan; and of course Allan is oblivious to both situations. Gabriella runs into problems with her cover job as a motivational speaker and business advisor when a former lover may blow her legend.

1.05 - "Quip To Black" (Oct 20/2016) 0.6/2 2.48
While the crew work late at night on a potential story break about government interference to force the investment arm of a trade union to boycott Israel based companies, Allan somehow begins to be able to hear the words of the Narrator in his head; causing him even more paranoia. Gabriella asks Wine to take care of her ex-boyfriend but he is so nervous that he badly bumbles the task, making it worse.
