During the summer the sleepy town of American Beech (named for the tree) in picturesque New England swells from a population of 10,000 to double that size with tourists who come for the small town values and world class beach. However, once the tourists are gone and the long winter sets in the town's quirks and still crazy inhabitants keep Deputy Sheriff Bobby Stacks extremely busy. However the fall of 2017 brings a new surprise, a dead woman, a housewife who may have been having an affair. What makes the murder even more troubling is that it mirrors a murder found the same time last year; and eerily again 11 years before then. Bobby dreams of working in a bigger, more professional police force but his applications have gone nowhere because he has been tainted by his time in American Beech which is run by his Uncle Danny Stacks who has a reputation for being on the take. With those dreams gone for years Bobby finds new incentive to solve this puzzling case.
