Rollin'; 2016-17 Season Preview
Liberty Television returns again to the City of Detroit, setting for other offerings such as Detroit 1-8-7 and Prince of Motor City, with a critical look at the seedy side of Detroit's auto industry and how it mirrored the demise of the city itself in a sewage of drugs and corruption. The project will be driven by Al Profit, formerly an independent documentary producer whose seminal works on the rise of crimes and drugs in cities such as Detroit and New York provide the backdrop for the gritty parts of the show. Joining Profit is veteran television man Bert Salke (Boomtown, Tru Calling, Prince of Motor City) and Donnie Wahlberg and Neal McDonough better known for their roles on the other side of the camera. McDonough has also signed on to play the show's lead man.
The rookie show will air Monday nights at 9:00pm/8:00CST following the comedy pair of Buy More and Alyssa Luvs Sean. Competition will be the second hours of Dancing With the Stars (ABC) and The Voice (NBC), 2 Broke Girls & Odd Couple (CBS), Jane the Virgin (CW), and Lucifer (FOX) in the fall, followed by APB in the Winter. It's a very diversified competition but no true "gritty" or crime procedurals match directly against Rollin'. The network believes that in that landscape the show should be able to produce at least the network average of around 1.0-1.2.
Rollin' is a time piece drama, set in the late 1970's Detroit, this anti-hero drama features an unusual alliance between a black FBI agent (Kareem) sent to Detroit to clean up the drug trade, with a white blue-collar "lifer" auto worker (Elliott). Elliott gets tired of seeing the city within the city, his massive auto plant, besieged by drugs and gangs, and the effect that has on morale, quality, and the long term decision by the company to keep production here or move it off shore. The writing seems to be on the wall for both the auto industry with the Japanese starting to take over market share, and with the city of Detroit crumbling around them. Unable to gain a foothold outside the factory Kareem agrees to help Elliott by bending and then breaking the laws, in return for progress he can show to his superiors.

The FBI sends controversial African American agent Kareem Jackson to the Detroit office to stop the organized crime system that makes the drugs flow. Kareem settles into his new apartment with his troubled younger sister Cherelle, and the two immediately face racism from the neighbours. The union betrays Long and Hardaway. Kareem has a meeting with Imperial consultant and executive from Germany, Jakob Hessler who lays out the plant's existence and perhaps the American auto industry history is threatened by the drug trade and the effect it has on the quality and efficiency of the assembly lines; but Kareem makes an enemy of Hessler by accusing the company of racism. Hardaway goes to pay another visit to Poolman but his people tell him that Long's daughter is dating one of their crew and if he makes waves she will be hurt; so he backs off. Elliot Long's brother in law, Dave Franks begins to deal amphetamines to primarily the white workers at Imperial. Teresa takes a job at a department store as part of her plan to become independent from her husband.
