A young man marries into a family run funeral business and the dysfunctional relationships within.
The Sweetan family has run the only funeral parlour in a small Colorado town for 3 generations. However, when the patriarch passed away he left the business to his eldest son, assuming that the younger son (Milo Sweetan) didn't want part of the business (leaving him money instead). However, the business soon fell on hard times due to mismanagement and negative demographics. The oldest son ended up bankrupting the business and fleeing to California where he fell into petty crime and drug dealing. In the meantime, the younger son bought the business out of bankruptcy and resurrected the good family name. Now the older brother has returned to Colorado and decided to open up a competing funeral home using the family name. The younger brother of course sued the older brother for trademark infringement. The two brothers came to a settlement that allowed both to continue doing business.
Into this mess Kevin, a troubled young college drop out, fell in love and married the younger brother's daughter, and married into the family. Kevin seems to fall right into the family business; however his wife has no interest in the sordid business and works as a Health Care finance manager and tries to stay aloof. The Grandmother still lives in the family apartment above the funeral home, either in early dementia or possessed by spirits; opinions vary. A young less than model Priest who does services for the public to earn a few extra bucks rounds out the main cast of characters.
