Episode Guide
1.01 - "Pilot" (2014) 1.2/3 5.19 Sep 15, 2014 Rick Preston is busy trying to run his Havana casino "The Philadelphian", taking care of American high rollers, enjoying what is supposed to be a dream position for semi-retirement, all the while navigating the choppy waters of the abusive regime of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. The initial episode see's him have to negotiate a truce between a pair of local cops, their boss, and his hot blooded Casino floor manager Sonya Acosta. His boss, mob connected Chicago man Abe Villani, pays him a visit to introduce his new chief of casino security for the Philadelphian Harry Gorman; another Chicago wise guy. Preston believes that Gorman is gunning for his job but has no choice but to accept the placement. A young CIA operative Bill Butler, who's cover is that he works in the U.S. embassy, approaches Ambassador Smith with a briefing that is very critical of the Batista regime. Smith has been on the job for about 4 months, and says that although he came in suspicious of Batista, after spending considerable time with him (socially) he believes that the U.S. can work with him; so he buries Butler's work. Young Jose Fernandez arrives from the Dominican Republic, ostensibly to work the sugar cane fields, but really to help the anti-Batista rebels. In a show of force, Harry Gorman shoots a Cuban man who it turns out is an off duty police officer.
1.02 - "Elvis Has Left the Building" (2014) 1.2/3 5.01 Sep 22, 2014 On the eve of entering into the military, Elvis Presley comes to play a gig at "The Philadelphian" as a favour for Abe Villani. Sonya confides to Rick that her brother is a communist and working with the anti-Batista rebels; but claims she has no communication with him. The police pay an intimidation visit to the casino. A rival casino tries to lure Rick to jump ship. Bill Butler circumvents normal channels to report up the chain of the CIA on the atrocities being committed by Batista; but when he hears nothing back he begins to worry. Ambassador Smith's wife comes to "The Philadelphian" to watch Elvis, along with a surprise friend; Batista himself. Jose Fernandez trusts the wrong man, and instead of being connected to rebels he finds himself in jail; and beaten.
1.03 - "The Philadelphian" (2014) 1.3/3 5.34 Sep 29, 2014 The local Havana police do a sweep to root out communists, including shutting down "The Philadelphian" for the evening while they question some patrons and staff (including Sonya). Someone takes a warning shot at Bill Butler as he has dinner in a local café. Rick receives a disconcerting letter from his ex-wife who is worried that their daughter is in an abusive relationship. Preston catches Gorman selling Cocaine and warns him about the way Cubans deal with drug dealers; but he refuses to listen and basically dares Rick to go to Abe with the information. Bill Butler stumbles upon a covert CIA operative that even he didn't know about that is helping train Assassins for Batista. Gloria Smith makes a return visit to "The Philadelphian" but this time her wandering eye is on Rick. Jose befriends a prison guard who manages to curtail the beatings, but when the prison is attacked by rebels the price of his freedom is his willingness to execute his new friend.
1.04 - "Sail Away" (2014) 1.3/3 5.22 Oct 6, 2014 Rick reaches out to Abe to have one of his heavies lean on his abusive son-in law, but when quizzed about Gorman refuses to complain. Amidst all this Rick buys a new sailboat. 1.05 - "The Dearly Departed" (2014) 1.3/3 5.16 Oct 13, 2014 Abe pays Rick a visit with unfortunate news that things got out of hand and Rick's son in-law shot and killed the muscle that Abe sent over to straighten him out; leaving Rick owing an unspoken debt to the mob. The call girl that Gorman set up with Lt. Lopez ends up dead from a drug over dose and the police come to brace Gorman for the crime. Rick gets into an argument with Bill Butler over his presence in the club, and his shadowing of Gloria Smith. Batista leans on Ambassador Smith to get guns covertly from his government despite an official ban on such transactions.
1.06 - "In For a Penny" (2014) 1.2/3 4.87 Oct 20, 2014 Bill Butler returns to "The Philadelphian" with a gift and apology for Rick; and the two find that they have common ground when it comes to dangerous opinions on the Batista regime. Jose finds out his group is being trained to try and over throw Haitian dictator Baby Doc Duvalier and considers leaving the revolution. Abe comes to Rick with a "request" to even out their debt; it would involve Rick making sure a Cuban businessman is killed. Seeing no way out of his trap Gorman turns the tables on Lt. Lopez in an all or nothing play. Bill Butler tricks Rick into meeting him at one of Batista's worst prisons to see the inhumanity served up there every day; a move that angers Rick and shakes his beliefs to the core. Jose witnesses a conversation between Alex Acosta and a man from Batista's regime and wonders exactly who they are working for. Sonya moves in with Ramon, a key member of Batista's inner circle. Bill Butler reports to Ambassador Smith that his wife is a flirt and nothing more; something Smith already knows is not true as he knows about his wife's indiscretions. Havana Renewed for Season 3
Broadcasting & Cable today broke the announcement that Havana has been renewed for a 3rd season on Liberty Television in 2016-17, despite middling ratings. The critical reviews as well as improved storylines have given the network enough faith in the show to assure its viewers of another season.
In an interview with executive producer Robert Redford and writer/consultant Alex Von Tunzelmann they went as far as to lay out the general plans for a continued storyline for the picturesque drama. The current season 2 should take the story up until the U.S./Cuba ties deteriorate to the point where The Philadelphian casino is taken over by the government, and the main players including Rick and Abe return stateside. However, instead of returning to Chicago, Rick will end up in Miami, in the middle of the Cuban ex-pats and their invasion and assassination plots, which will consume most of season 3. A 4th season would shift gears to a re-establishment of the Philadelphian, but this time in Haiti under the watchful eye of the brutal dictator Papa Doc. Haiti's proximity to Cuba, as well as Papa Doc's playing to the U.S's anti-communist sympathies will keep the possibility of a Cuban invasion or Castro assassination alive in the series.

Havana; 2016-17 Season Preview
Liberty television has renewed "Havana" for a 3rd season this fall, as it will air Monday nights at 10:00pm/9cst, following rookie show "Rollin'". The show has had a 9 episode front order placed but their is an expectation that a full 22 episode season will be requested. The show finished last season with a disappointing 0.8 demo but did skew older.
Last season saw Rick and others flee Cuba as "The Philadelphian" casino was taken over by the Cuban army. Abe who was arrested, and Butler who was shot to death were not so lucky.
In an interview with executive producer Robert Redford and writer/consultant Alex Von Tunzelmann they went as far as to lay out the general plans for a continued storyline for the picturesque drama. Instead of returning to Chicago, Rick will end up in Miami, in the middle of the Cuban ex-pats and their invasion and assassination plots, which will consume most of season 3.
The Monday at 10pm slot will run the drama up against rookie shows from ABC "Conviction", NBC "Timeless", giving way to "Taken" in the winter, and CBS' returning "Scorpion". So while it is a very drama heavy time slot there are no real heavyweights in the lineup. This compares favorably against last year where better known and hyped shows "Castle", "NCIS: Los Angeles", and "Blindspot" were the competition out of the gate. Given the improved landscape and a guest appearance in the first episode by Robert Redford, the network is hoping the show will see improved ratings this season.
Behind the scenes all the top crew have returned, and Alex Von Tunzelmann has been promoted from consultant to co-executive producer. In front of the camera Vincent Curatola who plays Abe returns, which means he might be getting out of jail. Philip Marlatt as Bill Butler is out though, and Moneca Delain "Trick 'r Treat, Lost Boys:The Tribe" as April Frost, and Alex Steele "Degrassi: Next Generation" as Angela Preston (Rick's daughter) are in. As mentioned Robert Redford will guest star in the season premiere, while Rick Roberts and Bruce Gray have landed story arcs, and Victoria Smurfit reprises her role as Gloria Smith in a recurring role as does Sasha Barrese as Elena. Dominic Chianese's role as Abe's mafia boss Mr. Borges gets an expanded look as does Anthony Ramos' role of Alex Acosta.

Havana episode guide season 3
3.01 - "Backstretch" (2016) (Sep 19/16) 0.9/3 2.79 guest star: Robert Redford A U.S. senator Cliff Wallington (Robert Redford) has an clandestine meeting in Miami with Rick who is the proxy for Mr. Borges, in regards to raising money for a Cuban invasion force. Rick and Borges meet with both the CIA's Grier and Gloria Smith at a Greyhound track to plot. Rick's plans to move back to Chicago are put on hold, no small thanks to Mr. Borges partially blaming Rick for the fall of the Philadelphian. Rick also witnesses some seedy activity at the race track, run by Gloria Smith, including doping and neglect of the animals. At her request Sonya's brother Alex works at trying to negotiate buying Abe's freedom.
3.02 - "Frosty Reception" (2016) (Oct 3/16) 0.8/3 2.55 Borges brings Rick out to see construction progress on a new casino in Miami, "The New Philadelphian" which he offers to Rick to manage if he continues on the "Havana Project"; also insinuating that as long as they play ball with the authorities they will look the other way to skimming, meaning Rick is looking at a 7 digit salary in the fist year alone. Jose gets a job as a cabana boy at a Miami Beach resort, but is constantly being hassled by gay guests when the bar manager spreads the word of his predications. Rick's daughter Angela arrives in Miami and after just a few days in the glorious sunshine makes a decision to make it permanent; against Rick's wishes. Gloria Smith makes a deal in regards to helping fund a Havana invasion with Grier; but it includes the two sharing a bed when she feels the need. Although Rick is upset at first that Mr. Borges hired his floor manager without his input, he quickly warms up to April Frost.
3.03 - "The Walk" (2016) (Oct 10/16) 0.8/3 2.95 Alex orchestrates Abe's release from the Cuban prison but it comes at the cost of not only money but some weapons that the mob doesn't even tell the CIA about. Rick attends a Havana fundraising event and meets the shady Mr. Popeil (Bruce Gray) who deals in weapons, and Rick suspects some human trafficking. Angela and Jose strike up an unusual friendship. April shows off her wild side. Mr. Popeil blackmails Gloria Smith and Grier. Rick receives a midnight telephone call from Elena which sends his head spinning.
3.04 - "5412" - "Beaten But Not Bowed" (Oct 17/16) 0.9/3 3.19 Jose is robbed and beaten, and he and Sonya stay with Angela and Rick while he convalesces. Sonya accompanies Rick as he plays middleman between Grier and Borges, calling on several prominent members of the Miami-Cuban business community. The New Philadelphian is on the verge of opening but April makes a critical mistake and loses a major supplier; a problem that she wants to fix herself without getting Abe involved. Abe has a rough beginning in Miami and misses the wild west of Havana. A news report comes out that 4 renegade U.S. operatives were arrested in Havana for inciting violence against the government; but any sign of the story quickly disappears.
3.05 - "Capers" Grier and Smith strong-arm Rick into accompanying them to Mexico City so that he can witness the training of troops; saying it will help him with his fundraising efforts, but really putting him on record as complicit in the arrangement. Sonya and Jose go to Guatemala with Mr. Popeil to make a deal on weapons; but are thrown when he murders a prostitute right in front of them. Rick see's a photograph in CIA documents showing Elena operating freely in Havana just a few days ago. Abe is forced to run the casino when April gets sick while Rick is in Mexico; and when the casino is robbed all eyes turn with suspicion to April.
