Apr 18/02 - Update
Chaos Reigns in South Africa
April 18 2002 - SAWF Report
Well it's time for the monthly update from sunny South Africa. So without further adieu.
National Title picture
On March 16th in Capetown National champion Frans Van Der Heever managed to once again thwart a solid attempt by Markus Dekker to beat the champion. With the Guardian and eclipse fighting outside the ring to beat away Heever's cronies, Dekker was on the verge of beating Van Der Heever. However, with the ref distracted by the outside brawl, when Dekker attempted to turn Heever into a sharpshooter, he was surprised when the champ sprayed his face with pepper spray!! This had to be about dirty tactic number 100 by Heever over the past six months. Heever nailed a DDT and got the win.
After the match in an interview taped for TV Heever announced that he had defeated every single wrestler of consequence currently in the SAWF. This was a fact that the announcers couldn't seem to dispute as they rattled off the names of the challengers who had spent the last year being frustrated by Heever's cheating. Then suddenly "Hell Awaits" by Slayer plays and out comes Royce Alger. Obviously he says that Van Der Heever had forgotten one name Royce Alger.
Alger had just come off a big win in his first match in SAWF against Jan van Dyk, a local hardcore wrestler. Dale Kuentz came out and told Heever that Alger was right, and he did deserve a title shot. Heever said that if Alger could beat his men (Wyld Boer, Van Staden, and Reichel) in a gauntlet match next week then he would deserve a National title shot. Kuentz said that was ridiculous, but Alger quickly agreed to the match.
Heever went on to finish what he had started to say before Alger interrupted. He has been champion for 15 months now, and will have beaten every major competitor. So, he will be taking his full 30 days between title defenses from now on, so he can rest and recover. The fans boo'd him, Kuentz looked pissed, but Van Der Heever just looked at him and said "Bite me"!. Kuentz just smirked and said your damn right I'm going to come back and bite you.
On March 23rd in Capetown, with Kuentz and Dekker watching his back, Alger managed to beat all 3 of Heever's cronies in that gauntlet match. However, following the match Jan van Dyk managed to sneak into the ring with a staple gun and left Alger a little momento on his forehead.
On March 30th in Capetown, Alger gave it his best shot in his match against Van Der Heever. Kuentz and Dekker again had his back, but Selita Segal came out to argue with Kuentz about his being around the camera so much. She has been very jealous of Kuentz and the cracks in her armor have been showing lately. She resorted to getting into a pushing match which distracted both Kuentz and Dekker, and allowed the Wyld Boer to enter the ring and sidewalk slam Alger onto a chair, while Van Der Heever had the ref distracted. However, as Van Der Heever went for the pin, Alger managed to take out a pepper spray which he used to spray the face of Van Der Heever. The ref saw the action but decided to let the match continue. Van Der Heever was at the mercy of Alger, and Dekker and Kuentz were joined by Guardian, Naughty Mokoena, and eclipse on the outside to keep the cronies away. But as Alger locked in the half-nelson submission the ringbell sounded. It turns out that Selita Segal told the timekeeper to ring the bell. Selita went into the ring and announced that Alger had been disqualified for using the pepper spray. Selita berated the ref for not doing his job, Alger for trying to bring even more dishonor to the title, and Kuentz for not being impartial. Alger had to be held back by the other wrestlers from getting his hands on Selita. However, he did manage to break through enough to put on the half-nelson for a few scant seconds before it was broken up by the boys. For his troubles Alger received a 30-day suspension from Selita.
Van Der Heever and his cronies celebrated their good fortunes in the ring but Selita was still not happy. She turned her wrath to Van Der Heever and said that although she couldn't force him to defend his title before April 30th she could pick his opponent for that match. In fact she could pick his four opponents for his title match on April 30th, in a Five The Hard Way Match. 4 preliminary matches with the top SAWF talent were set up with each winner getting into the Five Way match.

Te Rangi v Sperry
Sperry recruited former National champion Naughty Mokoena to watch his back in his fight against The Law (Tiger Eksteen, Lady Copp, Hiriwa Te Rangi). Lady Copp did her best to drive a wedge between Mokoena and Sperry by making sexual advances and flirting with Mokoena, who at times seemed quite fetched with her. However, when push came to shove Mokoena stood true at Sperrys side.
On March 26th Sperry faced Te Rangi in a Steel Cage Death Match as the main event in a show at Port Elizabeth with very special stipulations. If Sperry won then Lady Copp would be banned from wearing thongs to the ring, and would no longer be allowed to speak on camera not a single word. However, if Sperry lost then Mokoena would no longer be allowed to second Sperry to the ring or help him out in any manner. Given that Mokoena seems to be the only one willing to stick up for Sperry than that stipulation can not be taken lightly.
Sperry won the match when he beat Te Rangi so badly that he could not answer the 10 count. He then told Eksteen that he was next. No more thongs or talking for Lady Copp!!

Tag Team Scene
The American Flyers (Peregryne and Dave Mysterio) managed to end the month still the tag team champions. They beat back the challenge of Van Staden and Reichel, and then moved on to beat the Canadian duo of Massive Damage & Bishop Frontenac. However, not all is rosy between the tag partners as Mysterio played a big part in Peregryne losing his Cruiserweight championship this month.
Other tag teams doing well include Stohyer & Mersin (A New Dawn), and Moorhouse & Metalhead.

Cruiserweight Title
As mentioned we have a new Cruiser champion Duane Van Staden. Both the cruiserweight title and the tag title became pawns in the on-going feud between the American Flyers and Van Staden/Reichel of The Green and Gold. One of the blow off matches was a four corners match with all 4 of those men, for the cruiserweight title. Peregryne and Mysterio had managed to beat their adversaries at every turn. However, when they had to face each other in the ring things became a little intense. Mysterio ended up delivering a vicious dropkick to the knee of Peregryne which dropped him like a stone. Peregryne was crawling on the mat grabbing his leg. Mysterio went to check on him but passed too close to the ropes and was tagged by Van Staden. Reichel took care of Mysterio, while Van Staden entered the ring and took full advantage of the injured knee of Peregryne to take the match and win the cruiserweight title.

Other wrestling notes
A New Dawn got the better of their feud this month with the Catalysts. They managed to temporarily injure both Groenewald and Widget, putting both in the hospital. The Sleeperkid Lee Vakis though managed to come out of the feud relatively unscathed and even managed a clean win over Mustafa Mersin.
Robbie Royal finally thought he had the upper hand in his feud with fellow Brit Jayson Moorhouse, until Moorhouse recruited MetalHead. This insane brawler tipped the scales against Royal, until he went out and did a little recruiting of his own to get a former enemy of his Armand Rougeau Jr.
Naughty Mokoena has been anything but used 100% over the last couple months. The former champ says he still expects a couple months of relative downtime before he can be restored to the title picture
Kurrgan has seemingly got the better of Bull De Woods in their recent feud. Kurrgan is extremely unpopular with the fans. It looks like Red River Jack may be the next big test for Kurrgan
eclipse got the better of Wyld Boer in their matches this month

Executive Suite
President Mike Segal finds himself in a precarious position indeed. First off while he has a keen business sense he shies away from the camera. However, his daughter who will one day own this company does anything but shy away. In fact she seems to be enjoying it much more every day, and is starting to reach princess type proportions. However, Selita is very threatened by the presence of Dale Kuentz. She has started a campaign of undermining Kuentz. For his part Kuentz says he is just here to help out his buddy Royce Alger and is only providing advice and material when asked by Mike Segal. While he continues to be diplomatic Kuentz must be just about reaching the breaking point. So what can Mike Segal do? He has to let his daughter get experience in the business, but she does not yet have a vast wealth of experience. On the other hand Kuentz is both experienced and good with the talent. It would be a major blow for the SAWF to lose the skills of Dale Kuentz. However, when push comes to shove Selita is still Mike Segal's daughter.
The relationship with the WWA is going quite well, and all the SAWF executives are said to be quite happy with the new arrangement.
That's it for this month's report!
LATE UPDATE
Well I had just bout put this issue to bed when the unthinkable happened. Former 4-time National champion, Linley Tolbert has released a statement to the local wrestling on-line community that he will be making a statement live on SAWF television in late April. He would not say whether it concerned the rumors of him coming out of retirement. For those unfamiliar with Tolbert, he is a South African Natioanl Amateur as well as Professional wrestling champion. His career began in 1987 when he wrestled in North America claiming to be a Canadian. When SAWFs predecessor the African Wrestling Congress began running shows full-time in 1991 he returned to South Africa and reclaimed his heritage. However, he turned his back on the fans in 1993 when he turned heel in the inaugural SAWF Heavyweight championship tournament. He had already won his semi-final match in the tournament when his friend Lone Wolf Harley Tragger won his as well. Tragger went to visit Tolbert in his dressing room prior to the match and wish him luck. Tolbert became angry at his more successful friend and after Tragger had left, Tolbert followed him and attacked him in the concrete walled hallway smashing his head open. This tipped the scales of the final match enough for Tolbert to win. For the next 6 years Tolbert terrorized SAWF to a level that not even Frans van der Heever can yet claim. Finally, after losing the title to Cobra (now known as eclipse) he abruptly retired. Tolbert is still a fairly young man at around 36 years old, and is reported to be training for a return to wrestling. I guess that later this month we will finally get our answer God help us!
