Class Clowns
episode 1.01 "Stand-Up" 6/4/07 - 6.93
We are briefly introduced to the 12 contestents, 11 men and 1 woman, ranging in age from 22 to 42, who are asked point blank what they were like in high school, and what they are like now. We also briefly meet their former teachers who share the misery of what it was like to teach these clowns.
The first competition consists of each contestent delivering a two minute stand-up routine with the topic being "high school". The first surprise comes for the competitors when they look out into the audience at the comedy club, and instead of being busy including friends and family, there are only the 11 judges. (Each time a new class clown is brought to stage, his/her teacher leaves the audience so the remaining 11 are all strangers). The contestants have no idea their former teacher is waiting in the wings. To make matters worse for the clowns the judges are under strict instructions to do their best not to laugh, and at times begin to heckle the performers.
Each contestent is also given a quick exit interview backstage by our host as they leave the stage.
And then there were 11. The 12 judges (former teachers) cast secret ballots as to whom they wish to expell. They are not allowed to vote out their own student.
Exit interview is held with the contestent expelled and a short reunion is staged with his former teacher.
episode 1.02 - "Improv"
The remaining 11 contestents are brought back the next night for an evening of improv. Each one will perform a short improv routine with two local comedians. The locals are under strict guidelines to make it tough for the competitors by not feeding them any easy pitches, and whenever possible to make them uncomfortable by making the contestent the butt of the joke.
This time the audience is filled with a normal audience including some family and friends of many contestents.
The 12 judges watch on CCTV backstage.
Exit interviews are held with the 11 contestents and they are given an opporunity to vent on the local comedians if they desire.
Short interviews are shown with the contestents parents explaining what their children were like in high school from their point of view, and what they are like now.
And then there were 10. Tonight its the two local comedians from the improv who sit together and decide which of the 11 to expell based on their comedic ability, stage presence, and poise.
Exit interview is held with the contestent expelled and a short reunion is staged with his former teacher.
episode 1.03 - "Class Project"
The 10 divide up into 3 groups to work up a skit for the judges. The cameras continue to roll as each of the 10 tries to take creative control of the process.
This time each group decides on a member to potentially be cut from the show. The judges then gather to decide which of those 3 will be expelled.
Exit interview is held with the contestent expelled and another short reunion is staged with his former teacher.
episode 1.04 - "Toodles"
A successful business man who rents out clowns "Toodles" sends the 9 remaining contestents out to kindergarten classes to entertain the children. Except we made sure to drop a few "bombshell" extra children in each already typical unruly classroom. How will the clowns react and entertain the children when they receive very little help from the already overstressed classroom teachers?
Afterwards it is up to "Toodles" to decide which of the 9 remaining contestents will be expelled from school.
The usual exit interview is held, as well as critiques of all 9 performances by the kindergartners themselves.
episode 1.05 - "Draw From What You Know"
Each of the 8 remaining contestants is sequestered individually in small rooms (with hidden camera of course) and given only an hour to come up with material for another stand-up routine. The other difficulty is that they do not know until they are sequestered what the topic(s) will be. The general topic given is "high school" and then they are given specific topics like "gym teachers" or "nerds" or "auto mechanics" etc, that gave that student the most trouble when they were in school. With a limited time frame to work with chances are the contestents will thank their lucky stars and draw from material they already know, the ugly truth. But how mean and downright nasty will they get to try and get a laugh?
Tears are shed and feelings are hurt as the usual exit interview is held with the class clown who the teachers choose to expell.
episode 1.06 - "Stooges"
It's time to turn the remaining 7 contestents loose with a larger stage to do physical humor. Their audience consists of "tourists" who speak no English or Spanish, so it's time to act like the 3 stooges and get some laughs. The contestents though don't know until they hit the stage what props are available to them. The props include amonst other things a rubber chicken, a bucket of water, worms, a yo-yo, bannana peel, a bag of chips, soda, a French Maid, and a "ghetto blaster".
Exit interviews are held with all 7 contestents to gauge how the competition is going for them now, and if it has changed them at all.
The usual exit interview is held as the audience decides through an applause meter which of the 7 contestents is expelled.
episode 1.07 - "Street Workers"
The "sweet" six are unleashed to the sidewalks after having a few hours to plan their own individual candid camera style pranks on passerbys.
The judge is Peter Funt, the son of deceased Candid Camera host and producer Allen Funt.
The usual exit interview is held with the class clown who is expelled.
episode 1.08 - "Class Reunion"
The 5 remaining clowns are told they will once again be returning to the stage. This time they are told to do whatever material they wish to do. The surprise that awaits them is the front two tables will be jam packed with former classmates from their high school, especially the ones with whom they were not friendly. Included in that group is their teacher, the first time they have a glimpse of the truth.
The usual exit interview is held with the expelled clown, but then the remaining 4 class clowns are told a secret. All 4 are safe until the final vote and will be competing in episodes 9, 10, & 11 with the results to be known on episode 12.
episode 1.09 - The Diceman
The 4 finalists have the unpleasant experience of working up a routine with the very rude comedian Andrew Dice Clay.
Andrew tries his best to not only antagonize each contestant but to get them to say nasty things about the other contestents.
An end interview is held with all 4 contestents in the same room to go over any bad feelings that may exist from the Diceman's tactics.
episode 1.10 - The Quack
The contestents are told their next competition will be onstage with a comedian psychiatrist, and that they will have to improv being a patient. After a short period of preperation each gets their turn on the couch. However, this is no comedian but rather a real, and very talented, psychiatrist who will attempt to reach each of them as to why they acted out so much in high school, and if they still exhibit this behaviour.
Will the turns on the couch end in a hug or a slamming door?
Individual and intimate interviews are held with each contestent after their turn on the couch. Will any of the final 4 break, or will all be back for next week's final chance to prove themselves?
episode 1.11 - The Debate
We arrange all 4 final competitors on the stage behind podiums. They are supposed to be a high school debate final. However the topics are either inane or insane, and with no time to prepare the contestents go one-on-one in 8 lighting rounds, before a grand finale free for all. To win the debate they know the ability to make the audience laugh is far more important then the ability to make their point.
A final two minutes is given to each contestent to sum up their experiences on the show, and why they believe they should be the winner of "Class Clown".
In the final minutes of the show we drop the big surprise to the competitors and bring out their old high school teachers, finally revealing to the contestents the real nature of the show.
Their reactions will be shown on next week's finale.
episode 1.12 - King of the Clowns
Or will it be Queen of the clowns?
After the revealing last week of the role of the teachers, we get reactions and comments from the remaining four contestents and their teachers.
A brief highlight package of all 4 finalists is shown.
We then enter a classroom where the 4 finalists sit at the front, and our host is behind the teacher's desk. The other desks in the class are filled with the class clowns already expelled as well as all the teachers.
Each of the 4, in light of the new information, gives a short speach as to why they deserve the $250,000 grand prize. Then there will be some questions from the other classmates. The contestents can focus on why they deserve the prize because of their humor and material, or they can focus on how they have redeemed themselves or changed since high school, and since the start of the contest.
The 4 are then sent to the hall while the classmates have a final round table decision.
Before casting the votes however there is one final big swerve played out. The host announces that in addition to the winning class clown receiving $250,000, that contestent's teacher will also be awarded a cash prize of $100,000. So now perhaps a teacher who didn't want their own student to win because of old grudges will suddenly have a change of heart?
One by one the votes are tallied to determine the winner.
The prizes are given out and a final interview is held with the 4 finalists and their teachers.
