Pitch #1:
Tick, Tick, Boom - (MapleStar Entertainment)
An hour long action/drama based around two brothers who follow in their Uncle's footsteps in the small but intense Philadelphia Police Department's bomb disposal unit (the bomb squad). Conflict on the show surrounds the brothers' own Father who has always been against his sons doing the dangerous job, and blames his own brother for encouraging them. For their own part the two brothers who were once inseparable are also finding themselves drifting apart as the older one is now engaged and planning a wedding, a family, and moving out of his apartment with his brother. The show will be episodic in nature as there will be a variety of domestic as well as terrorist situations that arise each week.
Comments;
Trevor: Does Philadelphia even have a bomb squad? Love the name, but the concept is still missing something. Sounds like Friday night fodder to me and that's not what we are looking for.
Susan; What demographic is this going after? Is it a testosterone filled show going after males 15-29, or is it going after the older crowd of both sexes? It could work. I'm tempted to say we should buy a script.
Emmit; I had a heads up on this concept a couple months ago and at first was sceptical. But I agree with Susan, a script would be money well spent.
Outcome; Script ordered for delivery no later then Dec 15/08.
Pitch #2
Fore! - (MapleStar Entertainment)
Two of the top professional golfers in the world find their professional and private lives intertwined in the worst ways. USA see's these two African American golfers who are at the top of the money leaders board as one of the countries proudest achievements; until they regularly start hitting the tabloids.
Dante is the playboy who despite having a wife at home has been linked romantically with a famous singer amongst other celebrities.
Rasheed is the former drug addict who despite getting clean and rising to the top failed to keep his marriage together.
When Dante starts to date Rasheed's estranged wife though things begin to get ugly on and off the golf course between the two competitors.
Trevor; I hate it. And if we are going to develop a show about African Americans on TBA we should start with one that puts them in a positive light.
Susan; It sounds deliciously scandalous, but its still centered around golf. I don't know. You mix in a bit of interracial tension, maybe the ex-wife is white? Could be quite tasty. Maybe though this has a better chance of surviving on cable.
Emmit; I'm not sure I want to go down this path. I agree it might succeed on cable.
Outcome; No action taken at this time. Free to pitch around town but TBA keeps the option on this show until January.
Pitch #3
East End Girls - (Maple Star Entertainment)
Hour long dramedy.
The story of 4 close high school seniors (girls) who plan and dream about life after graduation, and escaping from their working class neighborhood in London, England to something better.
They are surrounded by parents who can either be resigned that their daughters will work, get married, and settle down in the East End, or some parents who dream of something better for their children. However, there is noticeably more concern that sons should go on to something bigger then there is for the daughters.
For their part, the sons are as the English would say "wankers" who can think and dream no bigger then the local football factory, the next pint, or hooking up with another bird.
Amongst the girls, the smart but mousy Mary is the one driving her friends the most to think about escaping, but she realizes with some bitterness that it is the airy but beautiful Claire who is most likely to succeed.
Trevor; Ha! I love the song West End Girls, but yes its the East End of London that this would be set in. I see a ton of potential here for some great writing.
Susan; What the heck? England? Don't they already produce enough of this stuff over there that we turn around and try and rip off? I understand you have a lot of production in Canada, but your not England anymore. Thats got to add to the expense. I don't see a future for this one.
Emmit; I think it would be a charming little show. Not really my personal style but it might be a hit with the young female demo that advertisers crave. I just am not convinced that this is the right network for the show, and don't think we could give it the kind of support and exposure it requires.
Outcome:
No action taken at this time. Free to pitch around town but TBA keeps the option on this show until January.
Pitches from November 3rd
Dear Diary,
TBA executives spent the day listening to pitches from a variety of independent producers and writers. Due to their status the names of those presenting the pitches has been witheld. If contact information is desired please contact TBA.
Pitch #4
Minor Miracle - independent
An hour long drama centering around a family and a small conservative town trying to wrap their minds around the situation when a young boy shows signs of being able to perform miracles. The key to this show will be that it will be somewhat subdued. The family struggles to try and keep the boy's life as normal as possible, while worrying how long this can continue before things get out of hand. Instead of going for the easy source of conflict between the family and the local minister, instead the minister is also a very reasonable man who is trying to work with the family to find out the source of his abilities and their extent. To this end he is willing to hide it from his superiors, and tries to keep the media and the more over the top members of his congregation in line.
In a world waiting for a miracle, this small town already has theirs.
Trevor; is this like going for the young female CW demo, or the old time CBS demo? Could be a sleeper hit, or just a sleeper. Who are the writers?
Susan; Just a sleeper.
Emmit; I love the idea, but I don't think its a fit for TBA. I would urge you to write a script on your own and flog it. The pitch itself won't sell to a network, but maybe the writing will. We would be willing to read a script but not pay for one.
Outcome; Pass
Pitch #5
Half Nelson - independent
30 minute sit-com
12 year old Nelson suddenly finds himself running the family pro wrestling business when his Father and Grandfather (the promoter and owner) are thrown in jail after a steroid scandal. Nelson lives with his high culture (opera, ballet, symphony) Mother who has no desire to run the family business and all desire to make Nelson a happy boy.
Of course the rough and tumble world of pro wrestling collides with the sensitive and still developing psyche of the young boy.
Trevor; Fail. Try to flog this crap to a youth network.
Susan; men in spandex...no, unless they are Circus du Soleil
Emmit; love the title, but it has zero chance of succeeding on network TV. Maybe as an animated show for our animated block.
Outcome; Pass
Pitch #6
Ghost Writer - independent
A bored young writer on the obituary desk at the Miami Herald takes his interest in the work too personal. The obit desk is staffed by a recent grad (Nick) who slid by journalism school by the least amount of work ethic application as possible, and a 76 year old former staff reporter who refuses to retire and begins each day by checking the paper in case his own obit appears.
Bored with the work Nick begins to pick obits that look interesting and looks deeper into their pasts.
Trevor; I don't get it. Is it like a mystery, Cold Case sort of thing, or like a "Harold and Maude" type thing?
Susan; I don't get it.
Emmit; I don't get it either, but its quirky, and thats good. Do we order a script? We scuttled an idea for a show "Death & Taxes" because it had the same name as a ReyesTV offering, and this is sort of its offspring. I really like the South Florida angle, very Carl Hiassen like.
Outcome; More details requested of possible storylines before deciding to order a script.
Pitch #7
Tuxedo - independent
Hour long drama
Every week this magically enchanted Tuxedo is worn by a different person, enabling them with a sense of foresight, urgency, and confidence to change their lives. Weddings, funerals, graduations, and important business functions are the backgrounds of the weekly episodic drama.
Trevor; So what, every week we have to find a different leading man who fits into the same tuxedo? Or does it change size and color too?
Susan; Pass
Emmit; Pass
Outcome; Pass
