Summer School (Dramady, 60 min) (10 episodes)
It must be a drag to watch your friends head to the beach every day while you have to continue going to class to finish high school. That would be the case unless you had a teacher who insisted on making the best of it.
Trish - stereotypical blonde from an upper middle class family, not motivated to learn, ambition to get by on her looks.
Alysa - Trish's African-American best friend, also from an upper middle class family, parties too hard to worry about school.
Brooklan - Goth chick, anti-establishment all the way
Larry - brainy senior, couldn't imagine taking the summer off, decided to take summer school despite having graduated because he didn't get into the Stephen Hawking camp for genius kids.
Stephan - new kid on the block from France, likes American women, Italian cars, and making things go boom.
Elk - offensive lineman from the football team trying to graduate so he makes scholarship.
~episode guide~
1.01 - Opening Bell 5/28/07 - 5.61
The first day of school and Trish and Alysa try to skip to go to the beach with their friends but Alysa's father anticipates it and heads them off at the pass.
Elk and Larry strike up an unexpected friendship and bond.
Stephan hotwires a teacher's car during the lunchour so he can quench the ladies's thirst for an Antonios' Milkshake.
The class is discouraged when their teacher turns out to be the infamously boring Mr. Fogelstein (Foggy).
1.02 - You Don't Belong 6/4/07 - 5.31
Mr. Foggy after receiving a rough run with the kids decides to go on mental health leave. The substitute is a former student, young Mr. Dyck. While his name makes him an easy target for the boys, he soon gets them on-side with his interesting teaching methods. The girls don't seem to mind him at all, calling him "Dreamy".
Stephan starts to try and hang out with Brooklan the goth girl everyone else ignores, only to figure out that she is actually a NARC. He struggles with his choice to keep it a secret.
1.03 - Beach Babies
It's a beautiful Friday after a week of rain, and Mr. Dyck decides to reward the class with a trip to a local Nautical museum. The fact that the museum only takes a half hour to go through and the beach is right across the street is not purely coincidental.
The morning goes well with the students bonding, but things go astray after lunch when the teacher falls asleep on the beach.
Trish & Alysa meet up with some of their preppy friends who are quite mean to Brooklan, which brings Stephan to the resuce, only for him to get pounced on by some football jocks, putting Elk in an awkward position of whom to back. In the meantime Larry hits it off with the forty-something curator of the nautical museum and misreads her to be his "Mrs. Robinson".
1.04 - Angst
Alysa gives in to peer pressure and begins to cut class. She then applies the same pressure to Trish, giving her an ultimatum.
Larry becomes depressed when he is not accepted into M.I.T., and then due to a computer glitch his Mensa membership is cancelled.
Brooklan and Stephan have a romantic moment, only for Brooklan to show her regret by giving Stephan the cold shoulder. In his anger Stephan lets it slip to Larry and Elk that Brooklan is a NARC.
Mr. Dyck receives an uncomplimentary review from the Principal.
1.05 - Trig is a Four Letter Word
The class has to bond together to pass an interim Trigonometry test. After Larry's brainy method of tutoring doesn't sink in, its up to Mr. Dyck to introduce some unusual props to get the class' attention and understanding.
The boys confide in Mr. Dyck about Brooklan being a NARC, which he doesn't take well. When he confronts the Principal about it he loses his temper and possibly his job.
1.06 - Substitute
When an aggressive gym teacher shows up as a substitute for Mr. Dyck, the class revolts, but is quickly brought back into line. The only exception is Stephan who skips out, steals a car, and goes to Mr. Dyck's house to convince him to come back. Mr Dyck is hungover and confides in Stephan about possibly being fired, until the student convinces the teacher to stand up for himself. They return to the school to confront the Principal. In the meantime the class pushes the substitute so far over the edge that he pokes Brooklan in the chest (which turns out to be a big mistake considering she is a NARC).
1.07 - After School Special
Mr. Dyck is back on the job but as the Principal puts it "on secret probation".
The kids decide to meet after school at Trish's house for a swim and a few thingytails. Trish' brother doesn't appreciate it though and gets into a fight with Elk, which is a big mistake. The neighbors call the police to break things up, and after ID's are presented Stephan is arrested for auto theft.
Mr. Dyck is furious with the class, but goes to court anyway to plead leniancy for Stephan.
1.08 - Job Fair
The students attend a special job fair designed to open their eyes to new choices. Alyssa begins to questionher friendship with Trish because she wants so much more out of college and her future then the party girl Trish.
Elk secretly pursues his interest in getting into interior design as a career choice.
Brooklan takes the oportunity while the class is gone to do some snooping, and comes to the conclusion that one of the other teachers is dealing drugs in the school.
1.09 - Crash &
Stephan gets bored, drinks, and then steals a car. Brooklan accepts a ride with him only to try and talk him out of what he is doing. It's obvious that they care for each other, but because he is a high school student and she's a NARC they seem unsure of pursuing the feelings.
Unable to talk him down, Stephan is challenged to race by a passing car, and after a short chase he crashes into a guardrail and flips the car.
Larry's parents tell him they are getting a divorce. He runs away, to a local internet cafe, where he considers committing suicide.
Alyssa gives it one more shot to try and talk Trish into taking her college future more serious.
1.10 - Burn
Stephan goes from critical condition to stable, but due to damage to his vertebrae will never walk again.
Brooklan has suffered head injuries and has swelling of the brain. It is unclear what her future will bring.
Stephan's rich parents fly over from France and tell his new friends that Stephan will be coming home to France. But the police tell them he may be facing charges here stemming from the crash.
Larry talks about his parents splitting up and his thoughts of suicide to Mr. Dyck, who feeling the sorrow and pressure of Stephan and Brooklan's conditions calls Larry a self-centered egomanical jerk; causing a huge rift between the two.
Trish and Alyssa agree to disagree, and in a teary goodbye agree to be summer friends, but they will attend different colleges.
As the summer class of '07 hang out in the hospital waiting room, amidst the tears, they talk about the valuable lessons they have learned this summer about being true to oneself, what it means to be a real friend, and to pursue one's dream with everything you have.
