~episode guide~
1.01 - Pilot 5/30/07 - 9.78
Irving & Larry meet for the first time when Irving goes out to get his morning paper. He helps his wife pack for the airport, wishes her well on the cruise and then in Europe, kisses her goodbye as she wishes him well with his summer writing.
But when he goes to get his morning papers, he has the USA Today, and 2 local papers, but he's missing his Wall Street Journal and it threatens to destroy his whole being.
Things go from bad to worse when Irving sees what he believes to be a prowler next door and calls the police. The cops bust into his neighbors house to find Larry reading the Wall Street Journal, and bring him out in handcuffs despite his pleas that he lives there.
On the front street things are sorted out and Irving is embarrassed ("I didn't even know Linda was married, how long have you lived next door to me?"). But then his apologies go out the window when he notices his neighbor is reading HIS Wall Street Journal, but the cops refuse to arrest Larry for stealign the paper and threten them both with arrest if they waste any more of the police time.
The men go their seperate ways.
Irving to his writing room where we see his memoirs still on page 1. Instead of writing he picks up a trashy romance novel from the bookcase "Loving Violet".
In the meantime Larry prowls his unfamiliar house, changing the channels, reading a big stack of newspapers and picking up the phone to say hello even when its not ringing.
The two men meet again up front when Larry sees Irving taking out the garbage and decides to do the same. The only problem is that as he rummages through his yard he can't find where his wife keeps the garbage cans. He does however find a cat, and unsure whether the cat belongs to him or not tries to ask the feline.
Irving can't take it anymore as he eavsdrops and tells a very relieved Larry that the cat is not his, and shows him where Linda keeps the garbage cans inside the garage.
Irving asks "no car?" when he sees the empty garage. Larry responds "company car, gone".
Later that afternoon and Larry is desperately trying to figure out how to get an old barbeque going to no avail, except to singe his fingers and cover himself in briquette dust and grime. When he sees Irving headed out he asks his new found neighbor if he can hitch a ride. Irving asks him where he's going, and Larry responds truthfully "crazy".
In the car the men have a heart to heart about their wives. Irving says that seperate vacations have kept his marriage alive for 20 years, it sparks the flames when they get back together in the fall. Larry says he and Linda never took a vacation together. When Irving asks where Linda is, Larry states the obvious "I don't know, I think she may have left me".
They park downtown where Irving has to go to the lawcourts. He wants to get out of jury duty and has to convince the clerk that his writing takes precdent over civic duty. When this doesn't work he goes into a public tirade about all criminals should be hung and quartered, etc, etc, until finally he is excused as prejudical.
Instead of going home though Larry has scoped out a murder trial going on for a man who murdered his wife, chopped her into bits, keeping the pieces in his deepfreeze.
The serious proceedings take a turn for the comical though when Larry gets into a staring contest with the accused killer and Irving gets hit on by a pretty young, but psychotic lady who gets turned on at these kind of trials. To make matters worse Larry had snuck in a mickey of gin and both men get drunk and silly.
The episode ends with both men sleeping it off in the drunk tank.

Larry shares with Irving the real reason he does not have a job; he had a nervous breakdown, his obsessive compulsive behaviour finally getting the better of him.
