So what was happening in the world during May 1983??
At the box office…
Flashdance held onto the top spot holding off new releases Doctor Detroit, Cheech & Chong Still Smokin’, and re-issues of Porky’s and Rocky III. Re-issues seemed to be a big deal back then. Flashdance would drop to #3 the following week losing out to new movies, Blue Thunder, and Breathless. And the next week saw a movie I’ve never even heard of take #1, Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. The last weekend of May however saw the juggernaut known as the Star Wars franchise take over the #1 spot doing over $23 million in business it’s opening weekend, with the newest installment “Return of the Jedi”. That’s more then the top 5 movies of the previous weekend combined.

In Canada…the month opened with “She Blinded Me with Science” by Tomas Dolby, “Beat It” by Michael Jackson, and “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie, 1, 2, 3, in Canada, and the month ended with Let’s Dance at #1, Beat It at #2, and Flashdance..what a Feeling by Irene Cara at #3. “Faithfully” by Journey was at #16, “Photograph” by Def Leppard was at #17, and “Every Breath You Take” by the Police premiered at #26. There were no Canadian bands in the top 20, with the Tubes placing highest at #22 with “She’s A Beauty”.
In sports…
NCAA Basketball saw the completion of one of the greatest Cinderella stories of all time as Jim Valvano leads the North Carolina St. Wolfpack to a victory over the Houston Cougars who were led by Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. This is how the Sporting News describes the final.
“Whittenburg took care of that deficit with two jumpers from well beyond the ACC's 3-point distance, tying the score at 52-52 with 1:59 to play. Valvano motioned his players to foul Franklin. The freshman promptly missed the front end of a one-and-one.
Suddenly, the game was N.C. State's to win. It held the ball until the final seconds, hoping to free Whittenburg for an open jump shot. But a pass from Bailey was high, and Drexler managed to slap the ball away.
Whittenburg grabbed the ball on the first bounce but was left with a desperation heave of about 30 feet. The shot was short, very short.
Olajuwon did not react to the ball, but Lorenzo Charles, a 6-7 sophomore forward who had spent a frustrating night trying to battle the towering center, slid down the lane.
"I knew when Whit let the shot go that it was short," Charles said. "I didn't know where Akeem was, just that he was behind me. I knew I was the closest one to the basketball.
"I just went up and dunked it."
Actually, he caught the ball in midair and slammed it through with one second remaining. Remarkably, ironically, N.C. State won the game and the championship, 54-52, on a dunk. “

May 20th: Boxing; for the first time ever, two World Heavyweight champions defend their belts the same place, on the same night. Larry Holmes retains the WBC title over Tim Witherspoon, and Michael Dokes retains the WBA title with a 15 round draw against Mike Weaver

Very strange to see the fans cheer for someone from T.O. instead of their hometown, but they love Rahib and are sick of the shenanighans of the England sisters. Rahib has about 2 inches of height and 40 pounds of weight advantage, which is more prononuced when tied together by a leather strap. England's usual heel tactics are also muted in this match as she is on a short leash, and without the aid of her sister. The champion though gets a few good licks in with the strap, but the start of the match, and the end belong to the challenger Rahib. By the end of the match England is in a fetal position as Rahib wails away at her with the lether strap. This causes referee George Gadasky to step in and call for the bell, awarding the match to Rahib.

Post-Match:
Greg Valentine is irate at the referee indicating that his foot had been draped over the bottom rope. The Destroyer was about to leave the ring when he saw the confrontation so he stayed to keep an eye on it. As things heated up between the ref and Valentine , The Destroyer attempted to mediate and was rewarded by a low-blow from Valentine and was then put into the figure-four leglock. It took several RCW officials to come down to the ring to break the hold. Officials see to the fallen Destroyer as Valentine gives the title belt a kick out of the ring.

We are welcomed by the hosts Ron Strong & Mike Stone.
Last week's show ended with The Destroyer beating Greg Valentine after a long hard match. However, as can be shown by a replay, Valentine's foot was actually draped over the bottom rope, a fact that was missed by the referee. Strong tells us that while all referee's decisions are final in the RCW, Valentine has been granted a rematch next week for the RCW Heavyweight title.
In the meantime tonight we will see two title matches as the Roughnecks defend the tag team titles agains the Cuban and Iranian Assassin who have once again manoveured themselves into the top challenger position. The other title match will see Ray Stevens try and unseat the Bounty Hunter for the television title.

Goldstein] As you know Ron, and as the fans know, The Destroyer beat this man, Greg Valentine last week to retain his RCW Heavyweight title.
The fans cheer the name of the Destroyer.
Goldstein] However, it was clear on the replay that Valentine's foot was draped over the bottom rope. Therefore, as we already know Valentine will be granted another title shot next week.
Valentine] Now hang on there a second Goldstein. You can give me as many title shots as you want...a title shot, is not the same thing as a title chance.
Strong] What is that supposed to mean?
Valentine] I would think it would be obvious if your hearing and brain weren't permanently damaged from the cold up here in Winnipeg. I don't stand a chance of winning the title when Goldstein and the other RCW officials don't want me to, and will do anything in their power to stop me from holding that title. I mean , come on. First Chris Lyon, and now the Destroyer. If things were on the up and up in this backwoods fed then I would have already had the title. I am a world class wrestler, a champion amongst men. A man amongst boys.
Goldstein] You've had every fair chance in River City Valentine, it's not...
Valentine] ...yeah just like last week? I tell you what Goldstein, you want it to be fair? Then let me assign the special guest referee for next week's match.
Goldstein] No way! Your just going to get one of your cronies to help you cheat to the title. I will pick the referee for next week, and if you don't like it, you can pack your bags and leave.
Valentine] Maybe I'll just do that then.
The crowd first cheers the news that Valentine may leave, but then cheer even louder when the Destroyer is spotted walking down to the ring, wearing jeans, red Converse sneakers, a "Journey" t-shirt, and his ever present white and black mask.
Strong] Ladies and gentlemen, your River City champion, The Destroyer !!!
Destroyer] Thank you fans, and than you Mr. Strong. Now, Mr. Goldstein with all due respect sir, I want this title I hold to mean something, not just for our fans but for fans around the world. I want the best talent in the world to come to River City and compete, and I certainly don't want anyone to get the impression that we hide this title under a bushell. So, I would willingly accept a mutually agreed upon official for next week's bout. So, Valentine who do you have in mind?
Valentine] How about my former tag team partner, Ray "the Crippler" Stevens?
The fans cheer the mention of the crippler, and the Destroyer takes a step back, measuring the crowd's response but looking somewhat hesitant.
Valentine] What's the matter Destroyer? You got a yellow streak down your back to go along with the streak down your mask?
Destroyer] I'm not sure I can trust Stevens yet to be impartial.
The crowd cheers now as they see Ray Stevens hurrying down to the ring to join the interview.

Stevens] Thanks gentlemen for the invitation, but I'm really not interested. I have my own agenda, and it consists of first beating the Bounty Hunter for the television gold, and then taking that gold from you Destroyer. I can assure everyone that I no longer have any association with scum like Valentine. If you don't want to believe that Destroyer that's fine, I could care less, because frankly I don't want any part of this.
Valentine] I was afraid something like this might happen. That's why I have a back-up plan. I have contacted another man who would be interested in coming up to Winnipeg to be the referee next week. He is Stevens' good friend Pat Patterson!!
The fans cheer and then boo the name Patterson.
Valentine] What do you have to say about that choice?
Destroyer looks to Stevens to speak.
Stevens] Like I said, I could care less what goes on between you two guys, but I'll tell you one thing, Pat Patterson is one of the most dangerous men alive. We fought up and down California for years, sometimes the best of friends, sometimes the worst of enemies...never anything in between. Destroyer if you think you can't trust me, then you certainly can't trust Patterson. But then again, Valentine if you think you can trust Patterson then you will be at the disadvantage because you won't be expecting it when he strikes back at you.
