At the box office…
while Spring Break kept the #1 position at the box office for a second straight week, Monty Python’s Meaning of Life premiered at #6…and Screwballs premiered at #15. Tootsie then made a comeback and regained the #1 spot at the box office the following week despite it being the 17th week of release…the following weekend though would see two new movies at the top of the box office with Lone Wolf McQuade starring Chuck Norris edging out Flashdance at #1…those two movies would swap spots the next weekend…and on the final weekend in April Flashdance well on its way to being a mini cultural phenomenom, would hold off new movie releases Something Wicked This Way Comes, Valley Girl, and The Hunger to retain the # 1 position…still going strong were Tootsie at #3 in its 20th week of release, Gandhi at #7 in its 21st week, and E.T. at #12 in its 47th week,.
In the news…
April 1st, In Great Britain, protesters form a 14-mile human chain in a demonstration against the planned NATO deployment of Pershing II and cruise missiles in Europe.
April 4th – Second space shuttle Challenger, makes successful maiden voyage which includes the first US space walk in nine years.
April 18th, Sixty-two people, including 17 Americans, are killed at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, by a suicide bomber. The bombing was carried out by a terrorist driving a van loaded with 2,000 pounds of explosives, which tore through the front of the seven-story building. Among those killed were a Marine, a journalist, several State Department officials and the entire CIA Middle East contingent.
April 20th, President Reagan signs legislation designed to reform the Social Security system and secure its long-term solvency by balancing income and expenditures. Cost-of-living increases are delayed for six months, payroll deductions are increased, and the minimum retirement age will be raised gradually to 67.
April 25th, Maine schoolgirl Smantha Smith is invited to visit the Soviet Union by its leader Yuri Andropov after he read her letter in which she expressed fears about nuclear war. Smith accepted, spending two weeks in the Soviet Union, and was greeted with a media frenzy upon her return. Smith would become a child social activist, and two years later in 1985 would die tragically in a plane crash when returning with her father from an interview. She was only 15.
In sports
NHL owners were aghast when "Wild" Bill Hunter (former owner and founder of the Edmonton Oilers of the WHA) had sealed a deal to buy the St. Louis Blues from Ralston-Purina and move them to Saskatoon. Fans in Saskatchewan had already begun to wear modified Blues jerseys to show their elation. However, the league and its owners, as well as St. Louis mayor Vincent Schoemel Jr. moved to block the sale. The owners didn’t want a team to move to a smaller Canadian city, and they were unhappy with the $11.5 million price tag, even though it was what Ralston-Purina was willing to accept. In the end the move would be blocked, the Blues would stay in St. Louis, and for the first time an NHL franchise would not participate in the amateur draft as St. Louis opted out in protest of the NHL voting to block the sale. In the end Ralston-Purina amidst lawsuits both ways, tendered the team to the NHL who ended up selling them for $3 million to Harry Ornest to keep them in St. Louis.
The New York Islanders would beat the Edmonton Oilers to win their 4th straight Stanley Cup. It would mark the end of one great dynasty and the beginning of another for the Oilers.
The Islanders won that series in 4 straight games with Mike Bossy scoring the series winning goal. Billy Smith the Isles goalie won the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP, while Wayne Gretzky led all playoff scorers with 38 points in 16 games. Gretzky did not score any of the Oilers meager 6 goals in the series against the Islanders.
Cellar dwellers during the regular season included Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, the recently relocated New Jersey Devils (formerly the Colorado Rockies), and the Detroit Red Wings.
April 15th.. Detroit P Milt Wilcox is one out away from a perfect game when pinch hitter Jerry Hairston singles, and Wilcox settles for a 4–0 one-hitter over White Sox ace LaMarr Hoyt. This is only the 3rd time in ML history a perfect bid has been stopped with one out to go.
April 16th, Padres 1B Steve Garvey plays in his 1,118th consecutive game, breaking Billy Williams' National League record. Garvey goes 2-for-4 in an 8–5 Padres loss at Los Angeles.
April 17th, Nolan Ryan fans seven Expos in a 6–3 Houston win to become only the 2nd pitcher to record 3,500 career strikeouts.
April 27th, In a 4–2 win over the Expos, Nolan Ryan strikes out Brad Mills to move a strikeout ahead of Walter Johnson and become baseball's all-time leader at 3,509. Ryan will finish the season at 3,677, with Steve Carlton leading at 3,709.

Tawney] *wraps a seductive arm around Strong* Strong...just like your name...how would you like a screw?
Strong] Pardon me?
Tawney] I'm just a lonely gal on the road, surrounded by all these strong men, and so I was just hoping you might want a good screw?

Tawney] Next week I finally get the chance to get back into the ring and will face my old adversary Jeannie Rahib. Jeannie, this beating you over and over again is getting old and tiresome. I need some new blood to face, and either it has to come to here in RCW, or I need to leave for greener pastures. So RCW make up your mind.
Corrie] She's right, and if she goes, I go too.

Destroyer] I needed some time off to recover, its been a tough 12 months and I'm not as young as I used to be.
Strong] What brings you back now?
Destroyer] The fans brought me back. I could have used another month off but when I see Greg Valentine running around *the fans boo* doing as he sees fit, when I see Chris Lyon hiding the RCW title from competition *again the fans boo*, and when I see no white knights to stand up and keep things honest around here..well, it's good to be back.
Strong] What's your first order of business?
Destroyer] Next week I have a tune up match against the Iranian Assassin. I know this is Canada, but as an American let's just say that I have not forgotten what Iran did to the American hostages. It's payback time and Assassin you have some receipts coming your way.
After that, well I think its time to return the River City gold to some lustre. I intend to take back my belt and shine it up real good for all to see.

However, as Lyon walked away he was confronted by The Destroyer who stared him down before allowing him to pass. Back inside the ring Valiant finally threw Valentine out of the ring to end the skirmish.

We are welcomed by the hosts Ron Strong & Mike Stone.
First we are told that Junkyard Dog sustained some ligament damage to his left knee last week and will most likely be out until early to mid May. They then remind us that last week’s show ended when the main event match for the RCW Heavyweight title between Chris Lyon and Mike Valiant ended with Greg Valentine interfering to ruin the match. Therefore the promoter of RCW Marty Goldstein has set up a special main event tag team match for tonight which will see Lyon & Valiant team up against Valentine and Adrian Adonis.
“No One Like You” by the Scorpions serenades the England sisters, Tawney & Corrie down to the ring for the opening bout. This was made from the challenge last week. Corrie tries to stay down at ringside but is sent to the back by referee George Gadasky.

Despite being the hometown gal, Tawney’s vicious turn last year has left her as the villain in this match. The fans boo her unmercifully, and chant “You’re a Boot, You’re a boot” at her throughout the bout. It’s a nasty back and forth catfight, in and out of the ring. Rahib gets her Indian deathlock submission finisher on England but its too close to the ropes and the champ manages to get a break. England comes back and takes Rahib down with a hairplane spin and then a flying dropkick right to the face of the kneeling Rahib. The pin attempt however only yielded a 2 count. The action spilled outside the ring, and Tawney managed to send Rahib head first into the guardrail. She then went back into the ring and distracted the ref while Corrie England reappeared from the back and nailed Jeannie in the back of the leg with a chair before disappearing again to the back. Tawney went to work with a series of kicks and stomps, before locking on a figure-four which quickly made Rahib submit.

Ron Strong holds a microphone for RCW matchmaker Marty Goldstein.
Goldstein] As a result of the recent turmoil in the heavyweight ranks I've been forced to make some difficult decisions regarding title shots and contenders. First off, Mike Valiant defeated Greg Valentine but was unable to participate in last week's big main event tag team match due to being attacked by Valentine and Adonis. Greg Valentine and Adrian Adonis did win that match, helping Valentine's claim to be the #1 contender. We also have the return of the RCW legend The Destroyer. Surely he ranks consideration for a title shot as well. So, this is the decision I have made. Tonight's main event will feature Chris Lyon defending his RCW Heavyweight title in a return match against Mike Valiant. If anyone interferes in this match they will face a one month suspension, and not be eligible for any title shots in RCW for a year. Whomever comes out of that main event for the title will have a new #1 contender to face. Next week we will feature a bout between The Destroyer and Greg Valentine to determine just who will be that #1 contender.
Tonight's second bout is a return bout from a few weeks back which saw Jake Milliman do the unthinkable and take the Cuban Assassin to a 20-minute time limit draw.

We are welcomed by the hosts Ron Strong & Mike Stone.
Our opening bout will feature ladies tag team action. "No One Like You" plays and the crowd cheers as Tawney England comes down to the ring accompanied by Jeannie Rahib, who has obviously returned to try and win back her spot on the roster. Already waiting in the ring are the inscrupulous Corrie England and her partner Shelly Salter.

Jeannie saw a lot of action early, as Shelly Salter played Ricky Morton and was worked over by the fan favorites. However, soon the tables were turned thanks to some double teaming and it was Rahib's turn to spend some time in peril. However, she managed to survive a piledriver and tag out to Tawney. However, at this point Tawney shocked the crowd as she turned on her partner, helping her sister lay a beatdown on Rahib. Corrie then gave Rahib another piledriver before attempting the pin. However, referee George Gadasky called for the bell. His decision was to award the bout to Rahib and Tawney by disqualification for some reason.

The fans jeered the England sisters so much that they moved the interview to outside the ring to save the mat from being hit with thrown sodas. The sisters laughed at having put one over on Rahib, and told her to get her fat butt out of town. However, as they laughed out came matchmaker Marty Goldstein. He informed the sisters that because the match had been awarded to Tawney & Jeannie that due to the match stipulations Jeannie was reinstated in RCW. The ladies understandably went ballistic.
Prior to the second bout starting, the tag team champs, the Roughnecks came down to the ring accompanied by Bonecrusher. Stan Rodgers said that after watching how 'crusher beat up on Claw last week the tag champs decided to enlist his help to try and keep the Canadian Kodiaks from pulling off any fast ones today. To that end, the 'crusher has obtained a temporary managerial license to stand at ringside with the Roughnecks tonight, as their special enforcer.

Ron Strong interviews Jeannie Rahib, who after losing a loser leaves town match to Tawney England was called back by Tawney last week to team with her against her sister Corrie, after apparently having changed her evil ways. But it was all a rouse to embarrass her even more, as Tawney turned on her and made it a 3 on 1. However due to a referee ruling and the match's stipulations, Jeannie has won her reinstatement in RCW. In the interview Jeannie throws out a challenge to the champ. She wants a pound of flesh, not just the RCW ladies title. She offers to meet the champ in a non-title strap match with Corrie banned from ringside. Tawney is not there to reply but Ron Strong advises the viewers that based on preliminary talks with RCW matchmaker Marty Goldstein who is very upset at what the England sisters did last week, you can pretty much bet that match will take place next week.
After a one minute break the 2nd fall begins.

The champion strikes back with a 2nd fall win. One would think that had it been a one fall match, or the deciding fall that The Destroyer would not have tapped out as easily. Hopefully he has something extra left for the 3rd and deciding fall.
But before we get to the final fall we have a special message from a newcomer to RCW, a huge signing by Marty Goldstein to bring in this legend and true international superstar.
Ray Stevens on videotape;
The former star of San Fransisco, California, the AWA, and other territories is coming to River City Wrestling. Stevens says that the fans have every right to boo him when he comes to Winnipeg but he hopes they don't. He says Greg Valentine is no longer a friend of his. The way Valentine has conducted business as of late is not any where near reasonable or civilized. Even at their worst behaviour he says that he and Pat Patterson never sunk that low. There's other guys too running around Winnipeg who need an attitude adjustment, including the television champion Bounty Hunter. Stevens says he is looking forward to his premiere in RCW next week!
We return to the main event for the 3rd and final fall after a one minute break. The fans were a bit subdued after the 2nd fall victory by Lyon, but they come back to their feet when the champ does not wait for the 3rd fall to start before attacking the challenger.

Lyon is quite distraught, holding his head in his hands, pounding the mat, and kicking the bottom rope repeatedly. The Destroyer offers a handshake to Lyon but the former champ just waves him off and leaves the ring in anger.
