Tonight's Lineup
Ox Baker vs Buck Zumhofe
Tessa Blanchard vs Jade Cargill
Nick Bockwinkel vs Antonio Inoki
Verne Gagne vs Greg Valentine
High Flyers vs Wild Samoans vs Steamboat & Youngblood
Danielson vs Goldberg
Flair vs Angle
Our opening segment is a backstage altercation. Verne Gagne is in Jack Tunney's office. Gagne has a knee brace on and wants to know why he is facing Greg Valentine tonight. Tunney tells Gagne that while he technically has a bye this round, it was decided by the championship committee that he should be on even footing with the other wrestlers in the tournament. His spot in the tourney is not on the line tonight but he will need to face Valentine. This brings the Hammer into the office. He says that after the way Gagne treated his legendary father Johnny Valentine on an earlier card he asked for this bout to teach Gagne a lesson. Verne isn't happy because he was really needing to rest his knee, and that damage was a direct result of the illegal attack by the Valentines. The Hammer says to just thank his lucky stars that he didn't get the Wahoo McDaniel treatment and end up with a broken leg. He insinuates that is his goal tonight, not to win the bout, but to put Gagne on the shelf.
Opening Bout
Ox Baker 6'5 342 lbs., Waterloo, IA
v
Buck Zumhofe 5'11 220 lbs., Honolulu, HI
As the bell rings, Ox Baker charges across the ring, aiming to flatten Buck Zumhofe with his massive frame. Buck, ever the agile competitor, sidesteps the attack, causing Ox to crash into the turnbuckle. Capitalizing on the moment, Buck unleashes a flurry of dropkicks and arm drags, keeping the larger man off-balance.
For two minutes, Buck maintains control, peppering Ox with quick strikes and high-flying maneuvers. However, Ox's raw power soon takes over as he catches Buck mid-air during a crossbody attempt. With a thunderous slam, Ox shifts the momentum and begins a brutal assault.
The action spills outside, where Ox rams Buck into the ring post and barricade. In a moment of cruel showmanship, Ox grabs Buck's beloved boombox and smashes it across the steel steps, drawing boos from the crowd. Back in the ring, Ox continues his onslaught with crushing bodyslams and his signature elbow drops.
As Buck struggles to his feet, dazed and battered, Ox sees his opportunity. He winds up and delivers his devastating heart punch, sending Buck crashing to the mat.
The crowd jeers as Ox stands over his fallen opponent, raising his arms in a display of dominance.
[Ox Baker defeated Buck Zumhofe by pinfall after the heart punch at 5:37]
[Buck Zumhofe is dead]
Post-Match: EMT's arrive and take Buck's body out on a stretcher. To a nicer guy it couldn't have happened.
Bout #2
Tessa Blanchard 5'5 125 lbs., Charlotte, NC
v
Jade Cargill 5'10 160 lbs., Vero Beach, FL
Before the bell even rings, Blanchard and Cargill explode into a wild brawl, their animosity from their previous encounter boiling over. The referee struggles to regain control as the two powerhouses trade vicious strikes.
Once the match officially begins, Blanchard's craftiness becomes apparent. She discreetly pulls a length of tape from her trunks, using it to choke Cargill when the referee's view is obstructed. This underhanded tactic disrupts Cargill's rhythm, preventing her from unleashing her full power.
Midway through the match, Bobby Heenan appears at ringside, ostensibly to scout talent. His presence momentarily distracts Cargill, allowing Blanchard to hit a devastating DDT for a near fall.
Cargill finally gains momentum with a series of powerful slams, but Blanchard's relentless assault has taken its toll. As Cargill sets up for her Jaded finisher, Blanchard desperately grabs the referee, using him as a shield. The official admonishes Blanchard, but stops short of disqualifying her.
In the match's closing moments, Blanchard attempts to use the tape again, but Cargill catches her in the act. In the ensuing chaos, Cargill clotheslines Blanchard over the top rope. Both women tumble to the floor, where Blanchard's head collides with the steel steps. Unable to answer the ten-count, Blanchard loses via count-out.
[Jade Cargill defeated Tessa Blanchard by countout at 12:02]
Post-Match: Instead of going to help or check on Blanchard, Heenan gives Cargill what can only be described as a golf clap before walking to the back.
Before we go to the next bout we have a situation backstage.
The cameras show security breaking up an altercation. Greg Valentine is lying on the floor of the back stage area, holding onto his arm. Sid Vicious is standing over Valentine trying to break through security to get to him. Valentine is in agony and yelling, "I don't care that much. Go ahead, take my bout against Gagne tonight. Just get the hell out of here!". Satisfied the big man smiles and calmly walks away.
Bout #3
Heavyweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal
Nick Bockwinkel (/w Bobby Heenan) 5'11 240 lbs., Beverley Hills, CA
v
Antonio Inoki 6'3 240 lbs., Tokyo, Japan
The bell rings, and Bockwinkel immediately locks up with Inoki, showcasing his technical prowess. Inoki counters with a swift arm drag, but Bockwinkel recovers quickly, applying a headlock. The two legends trade holds and counters, neither gaining a clear advantage.
Midway through the match, Bockwinkel catches Inoki with a piledriver, nearly securing a three-count. Inoki rallies, hitting a series of knife-edge chops and a spinning heel kick. As the match intensifies, both men pull out more signature moves – Bockwinkel's abdominal stretch and Inoki's octopus hold.
At the 15-minute mark, the crowd erupts as Jumbo Tsuruta rushes to ringside, seemingly to aid his fellow Japanese wrestler. However, as Inoki sets up for his enzuigiri, Tsuruta grabs his leg, causing him to lose balance. Bockwinkel seizes the opportunity, rolling up the distracted Inoki for a quick pin.
The referee counts three, and Bockwinkel is declared the winner.
[Nick Bockwinkel defeated Antonio Inoki by pinfall after a victory roll at 17:55]
Post-Match: As Bobby Heenan celebrates with his client, a confused Inoki confronts Tsuruta. The interference, intended to help Inoki, has backfired spectacularly, sending shockwaves through the tournament and setting up potential future confrontations.
Bout #4
Verne Gagne 5'11 215 lbs, Corcoran, MN
v
Sid Vicious 6'9 317 lbs., West Memphis, AR
The bell rings, and Sid immediately charges at Gagne, who deftly sidesteps and applies a hammerlock. Gagne's technical prowess is on full display as he transitions from hold to hold, frustrating the larger Sid. A well-timed drop toehold sends Sid crashing to the mat, allowing Gagne to work on the arm.
Sid eventually powers out and targets Gagne's injured knee with a devastating kick. He follows up with a series of knee drops and stomps, causing Gagne visible pain. Attempting to finish the match, Sid clumsily tries to apply a figure four leglock, but Gagne counters with a small package for a near fall.
Gagne rallies with a series of European uppercuts and a backdrop suplex. However, as he attempts his patented sleeper hold, Sid counters by ramming Gagne backward into the turnbuckle. He then nails a kneebreaker. This time, Sid successfully locks in the figure four leglock. Realizing the potential for further injury, Gagne quickly taps out.
[Sid Vicious defeated Verne Gagne by submission to the figure-four leglock at 7:01]
Post-match: Sid refuses to release the hold, continuing to wrench Gagne's knee. The High Flyers (Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell) rush to the ring, forcing Sid to retreat. They tend to the fallen legend as the crowd boos Sid's actions vociferously.
Bout #5
High Flyers: Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell combined wt. 445 lbs.
v
Wild Samoans: Afa & Sika (/w Cpt. Lou Albano) combined wt. 645 lbs.
v
Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood combined wt. 479 lbs.
The bell rings, and all three teams immediately showcase why they're world-class tag teams. Gagne and Steamboat start, trading arm drags and dropkicks at a blistering pace. The action quickly breaks down as all six men enter the ring, with the Wild Samoans clearing house using their raw power.
As the match settles into a rhythm, each team takes turns isolating an opponent. The Samoans focus on brutal headbutts and nerve holds, while the High Flyers utilize quick tags and double-team maneuvers. Steamboat and Youngblood dazzle with their innovative offense and high-flying moves.
Midway through, Brunzell finds himself trapped in the Samoans' corner, enduring a series of crushing headbutts from Sika. He finally escapes and makes a hot tag to Gagne, who cleans house with dropkicks and his patented sleeper hold attempt on Afa.
The match's climax sees all three teams hitting signature moves in rapid succession. Youngblood lands a tomahawk chop on Brunzell, only to be caught with a Samoan drop from Sika. Gagne breaks up the pin attempt.
In the final moments, Steamboat and Afa are the legal men. Steamboat goes for his flying crossbody, but Afa rolls through. Capitalizing on the chaos, Gagne blind tags himself in. As Afa throws Steamboat off, Gagne sneaks in and rolls up Afa with a small package. The referee counts three giving the High Flyers the hard-fought victory.
[High Flyers defeated the Wild Samoans and Steamboat & Youngblood by pinfall when Gagne pinned Afa with a small package at 17:26]
Post-Match: While the Samoans left the ring in anger, the High Flyers and Steamboat and Youngblood stayed to shake hands.
Bout #6
Heavyweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal
Bryan Danielson 5'10 210 lbs. Aberdeen, WA
v
Bill Goldberg 6'4 285 lbs Atlanta, GA
The bell rings, and Goldberg immediately charges at Danielson with a bull rush. Danielson narrowly avoids it, causing Goldberg to crash into the turnbuckle. Capitalizing on the moment, Danielson peppers Goldberg with kicks to the legs and torso.
Goldberg regains control with his raw power, hitting a thunderous powerslam. He attempts a leg whip, but Danielson counters it into a dragon screw leg whip, targeting Goldberg's knee. This sets the tone for the match, with Danielson methodically working on Goldberg's legs to neutralize his power advantage.
As the bout progresses, Goldberg manages to hit his trademark spear, but Danielson kicks out at two. Frustrated, Goldberg attempts a jackhammer, but Danielson slips out and locks in the LeBell Lock. Goldberg struggles but eventually reaches the ropes.
In the closing moments, Goldberg goes for another spear, but Danielson sidesteps and catches him with a running knee strike. He follows up with a series of Yes Kicks to Goldberg's chest. As Danielson attempts a final kick, Goldberg catches his leg but twists Danielson's knee awkwardly.
Despite the injury, Danielson manages to roll through and lock in a modified heel hook. Goldberg, his leg already weakened, has no choice but to tap out.
[Bryan Danielson defeated Bill Goldberg by submission to the heel hook at 12:08]
Post-Match: Danielson advances in the tournament but clutches his knee in pain as the referee raises his hand in victory.
Main Event
Heavyweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal
Ric Flair 6 '1 243 lbs., Charlotte, NC
v
Kurt Angle 6'0 220 lbs., Pittsburgh, PA
The bell rings, and Flair immediately goes for a cheap shot, which Angle ducks, responding with a quick takedown. Angle's amateur wrestling skills shine as he controls Flair on the mat, but the Nature Boy slithers to the ropes, forcing a break.
Flair takes control with his signature chops and a series of knee drops. He locks in the figure-four leglock early, but Angle powers out. The Olympic Gold Medalist mounts a comeback with a series of German suplexes, but Flair thumbs Angle's eye when the referee is distracted.
Midway through, Flair attempts a top-rope maneuver, but Angle catches him and hits an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Angle follows with the Angle Slam, but Flair kicks out at 2.9. Frustrated, Angle applies the ankle lock, but Flair reaches the ropes.
As the match approaches the 25-minute mark, both men are exhausted. Flair resorts to his dirty tactics, low-blowing Angle behind the referee's back. He follows with a chop block to Angle's knee, setting up for another figure-four. This time, Angle reverses it, nearly forcing Flair to tap.
In the closing moments, Flair feigns a knee injury. When the referee checks on him, Flair pulls brass knuckles from his trunks. As Angle charges, Flair connects with the foreign object. He quickly disposes of the evidence and covers Angle. The referee, unaware of the cheating, counts to three.
[Ric Flair defeated Kurt Angle by pinfall after hitting him with brass knuckles at 27:12]
Post-match: Flair struts around the ring, celebrating his victory while a dazed Angle protests the outcome.
That's it for another edition of Perplexity Wrestling!
